Atelier Van Lieshout’s sculptures always start with the sketches Joep van Lieshout makes hundreds of every month. Over the past six years, a rhino increasingly kept cropping up. Van Lieshout saw himself in it. He also only has two modes: rest and contemplation or relentless forward motion.

The sculpture he subsequently created of a giant rhino with a labyrinthine structure drilled into it ended up in his studio due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the postponement of KadS. Van Lieshout used the lockdown to turn out dozens of sculptures at high speed, often with Christian themes. The descents from the cross and the last supper depict and comment on the values of human existence that were so constrained by the virus.

Surrounded by religious iconography Van Lieshout suddenly realised: that rhino is the place for Mozes, the prophet who led the Jews to the promised land and received God’s ten commandments on Mount Sinai. He fitted the sculpture with a heavy, armoured door that locks from the inside so you can hide in the belly of the beast. Once rejuvenated, you can come storming out with your own version of the stone tablets.

However, the sculpture isn’t just for solo use. It provides room for four or five people. Metal rings on the wall suggest hedonistic rituals could take place. The sculpture’s bronze appearance reinforces the impression of it being an idol. Typical for Atelier Van Lieshout’s tendency to be ambiguous, the rhino is an armoured warrior and a sacrificial animal in one. An incubator for high ideals and a breeding ground for the most base instincts.

Vandaag start G.O.A.T. – DE KLEINE COMMUNE van Arnon Grunberg, een groepsessie op een geheime locatie.
Dit project is door Soledad Senlle Art Foundation en Eva Gonggrijp voor KadS 2021 georganiseerd.

De deelnemers eten, slapen, discussiëren en spelen samen, voeren ochtendrituelen uit en schrijven hun eigen geloofsbrieven. De commune is een snelkookpan buiten de orde van de reguliere maatschappij, een sociaal experiment om het begrip gemeenschap te herijken. Hoe verhouden we ons tot elkaars behoeften, angsten en lijden? En hoeveel regels zijn er nodig om vrijheid niet te laten ontaarden in onderdrukking en machtsstrijd?
Behalve de communeleden leven er op het eiland ook geiten. Grunberg heeft deze eigenwijze en weinig poezelige beesten verheven tot goddelijke wezens. Ook tot hen moeten de deelnemers zich verhouden. Negeren ze het kleinvee, proberen ze hun liefde te winnen of hen te domesticeren? Wellicht oppert iemand zelfs slacht.
Grunberg treedt hierbij niet op als goeroe die wijsheden delibereert, maar stelt vragen en observeert, masseert de interactie om de juiste chemie op te wekken. Hij noemt zichzelf ironisch mysticus. Als schrijver leeft hij bij de gratie van verhalen en neemt hij mythes serieus, maar relativeert ze net zo goed. Dat geldt ook voor het verhaal dat ontstaat tijdens deze twee etmalen. Of het een utopisch Walden wordt of een nachtmerrieachtig Lord of the Flies hangt af van de deelnemers.

Today start G.O.A.T. – THE SMALL COMMUNE by Arnon Grunberg at a secret island close to Amsterdam.
This project is organised bij Soledad Senlle Art Foundation and Eva Gonggrijp for KadS 2021.
The selected members will eat, sleep, discuss, play, perform morning rituals and write their own religious precepts. The commune is to act as a pressure cooker outside ordinary society, a social experiment to enrich the concept of community. How do we relate to one another’s needs, fears and suffering? How many rules are required to ensure freedom doesn’t devolve into repression and power struggles?
The island is also home to goats. Grunberg has elevated these stubborn, not so cuddly creatures to godlike status. The participants will also have to relate to them. Will they ignore the livestock? Will they attempt to win their affection or try to domesticate them? Perhaps someone will even suggest slaughtering them.
Grunberg won’t act like a guru spouting aphorisms, but will ask questions and observe as well as massage the interaction to create the right chemistry. He refers to himself as an ironic mystic. As an author, he lives off stories and takes myths seriously, whilst just as easily putting them into perspective. This also applies to the story that will develop over the two days. Whether things become a utopian Walden or a nightmarish Lord of the Flies all depends on the participants
