Join us Saturday 19 September for ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ค ๐๐ช๐ต๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จ, a conversation between Lawil Karama (Lawil Laboke Karama), initiator of ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ and anthropologist, artist, and curator Edward Akintola Hubbard ().
In this first event of the context programme of ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ, the audience is invited into Karamaโs ongoing process, offering a view of how the ideas behindย ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ด๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ค ๐๐ช๐ต๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ด๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จย as a computer script emerged from years of investigation into the archive of human rights violations during the Idi Amin regime in Uganda (1971-1979). They will shed light on Karamaโs long-term research into the limits of representing violence, the possibilities for staging sites of memorial, and the notion of โatmospheric witnessingโ.
With โatmospheric witnessing,โ Karama counters conventional notions of spectatorship connected to photographic documentation, looking, instead, to the sky itself as an actant present to Aminโs system of executions. The concept also, as Karama and Hubbard will explore, serves as a key starting point for the broader curatorial concept behind the exhibitionย ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ต๐ถ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ.
This event will be held in English.
