Running through all projects is a commitment to practices of frictioning: engaging technologies against their colonial grain, and lingering in the affectively, ancestrally, archivally, and forensically intertwined conditions of lived experience and knowledge production. Collectively, the works ask: Who, or what, enframes and enlivens acts of remembering violence, which have been rendered invisible, unspeakable, and unthinkable?

The exhibition features work by Samuel Baidoo, Michรจle Boulogne, Laura Fong Prosper and Tin Wilke, Lawil Karama, Aram Lee, Komtouch Napattaloong, Bart Seng Wen Long, and Kaisa Saarinen.

The exhibition title carries in it two meanings: on the one hand,ย natureย is evoked, drawing focus to actants, actors, and animacies beyond and beside the human, who witness, participate in, index, recollect, foretell, and haunt historical time. On the other hand, the idiomatic expressionย the nature ofย is taken up as a provocation, pushing against pervasive ideological and violently enforced notions of remembering and of commemorating.โ€จโ€จRunning through all projects is a commitment to practices of frictioning: engaging technologies against their colonial grain, and lingering in the affectively, ancestrally, archivally, and forensically intertwined conditions of lived experience and knowledge production. ๐˜‘๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ด by Ai Ozaki ( )

With these jars, used for fermenting vegetables, Ai brings an ode to the ritual called ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฆ, the gathering of a personโ€™s ashes, at her grandfatherโ€™s funeral.ย

During ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ฆ family members pick up bone fragments of a deceased relative with long chopsticks and put them in the urn as a final act of care. This Japanese tradition points to the deceased becoming ancestors who remain present in everyday life. Ai reimagines this ritual of mourning as a culinary ritual. Vegetables ferment inside of these weeping jars, resembling funeral urns, transforming loss through the slow, everyday act of pickling.

is a visual artist whose practice investigates the ways that her body interacts with โ€˜the Otherโ€™, which is not only other people, but all living things, even herself. In her practice she imagines forms of communication with these close, yet incomprehensible, beings and things, and considers how images that emerge from peopleโ€™s lives relate to each other across different times and cultures.ย

These water collection points, connected with a trail of found objects that trace habitability under ecological erasure, form spatial vocabularies that make up a watching station. As part of a larger project on the Gezira Schemeโ€”one of the worldโ€™s largest irrigation projectsโ€”, Ola frames watching the water as a practice of care; of listening and responding to what feels broken.

The cycle of life is echoed in the engraved columns on which the water tank rests, and their traditional motifs inspired by the ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฃ, a bedโ€”stemming from early Nubian heritageโ€”that carries Sudanese people at birth and death.ย

โ€™s work moves through architecture, film, and spatial strategies to reflect on the visibility and embodied experience of power through built environments. She engages with places shaped by climate instability, postcolonial legacies, and displacement, thinking through the politics of inhabiting and the interplay of ecological and social systems.ย
