Een filmtheater en café gerund door uitsluitend studenten en een kat, met een veelzijdig aanbod van film, debat, muziek en kunst - allemaal in het hartje van Amsterdam. Tot op de dag van vandaag vormt het concept van Kriterion een unicum in Nederland en zover ons bekend in de wereld: een non-hiërarchisch bedrijf dat volledig door studenten wordt gerund. Opgericht door oud-verzetsleden opende op 6

november 1945 Kriterion haar deuren, met als doel “studenten aan de Amsterdamse Universiteiten in staat te stellen zelf de kosten van hun studie te verdienen.”

We opereren zonder subsidies en winstoogmerk en bieden het publiek een breed scala aan programma's in de bioscoop, en de lekkerste biertjes in ons café. De organisatiestructuur is direct democratisch en dit zorgt elke dag opnieuw voor een aangename werkomgeving, ruimte voor creativiteit en een soms iets te gezellige sfeer voor zowel medewerker als bezoeker, in ons historische pand aan de Roetersstraat.

Venus Boyz (2002) | Pride 2026 | 12th August

“Here I am, and you can’t avoid me.”

Venus Boyz is a documentary that dives into the world of female masculinity, tracing the lives of drag kings, transgender men, and gender-nonconforming people across New York and London. Starting out in New York’s lively drag king club scene, the film unpacks the countless ways masculinity gets performed and reshaped.

Through intimate interviews and impressive performances, director Gabriel Baur treats gender as both something people express and something they live. For some, masculinity is a one-night playful performance. For others, it’s a core piece of who they are. Venus Boyz delivers a unique look at gender and self-determination, while also amplifying voices from communities that have long pushed back against traditional notions of what masculinity means.

P.S. Burn This Letter Please | PRIDE 2026 | 9th & 19th of August

P.S. Burn This Letter Please is a moving documentary that brings to light a forgotten piece of LGBTQ+ history, built around a cache of personal letters found in a storage unit nearly six decades after they were written. These letters give a glimpse into New York’s drag scene of the 1950s, a time when simply being yourself could mean facing intense violence or even being cast out of society.

The documentary brings together personal accounts and rare archival footage, showcasing a vibrant underground world that history came close to losing entirely. P.S. Burn This Letter Please honors the courage it once took, and, for so many, still takes, to live openly as ourselves.

Our Amsterdam Pride Month program officially kicked off today, and we cannot wait to celebrate q***r cinema with you all month long.

This year's selection highlights the richness and diversity of q***r stories, featuring everything from action-packed cult classics like D.E.B.S. (2004), to the wild German musical City of Lost Souls (1983), the heartfelt Filipino coming-of-age film The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros (2005), and the sun-soaked Dutch romance Een Vrouw Als Eva (1979).

We're also screening two fascinating documentaries exploring the world of drag: P.S. Burn This Letter Please and Venus Boyz.

Midzomernachtsdroomavond | Zomeravond | 27th, 29th & 31st of July

In old England, the summer solstice marked the middle of the harvest season. This magical time was filled with love spells and supernatural forces, as it was believed that the boundary between the mortal and fairy realm was broken during this time. It was celebrated with many festivities, feasts and the gathering of flowers. William Shakespeare brought these English folklore traditions together in the story of his 1595 play "A Midsummer Night's Dream", with its mystical atmosphere of the midsummer woods and dream-like love. 🌾

In our A Midsummer Night's Dream evening program, we will be screening two film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays: Romeo + Juliet (1996) and Chimes at Midnight (1965). Though two completely different films, both touch on the subjects of honor and keeping promises and, of course, are beautiful adaptations of Shakespeare's work.

A special Kriterion play of Shakespeare may be held on one of the evenings, stay tuned for more information! 🎭
