Een filmtheater en café gerund door uitsluitend studenten en een kat, met een veelzijdig aanbod van film, debat, muziek en kunst - allemaal in het hartje van Amsterdam. Tot op de dag van vandaag vormt het concept van Kriterion een unicum in Nederland en zover ons bekend in de wereld: een non-hiërarchisch bedrijf dat volledig door studenten wordt gerund. Opgericht door oud-verzetsleden opende op 6

november 1945 Kriterion haar deuren, met als doel “studenten aan de Amsterdamse Universiteiten in staat te stellen zelf de kosten van hun studie te verdienen.”

We opereren zonder subsidies en winstoogmerk en bieden het publiek een breed scala aan programma's in de bioscoop, en de lekkerste biertjes in ons café. De organisatiestructuur is direct democratisch en dit zorgt elke dag opnieuw voor een aangename werkomgeving, ruimte voor creativiteit en een soms iets te gezellige sfeer voor zowel medewerker als bezoeker, in ons historische pand aan de Roetersstraat.

Set in 1977, back when intimacy was safe, pleasure was a business, and business was booming. Idealistic erotic film producer Jack Horner aspires to elevate his craft to an art form. Horner discovers Eddie Adams, a hot young talent working as a busboy in a nightclub, and welcomes him into the extended family of movie-makers, misfits, and hangers-on that are always around. Adams’ rise from nobody to a celebrity adult entertainer is meteoric, and soon the whole world seems to know his erotic film alter ego, “Dirk Diggler”. Now, when disco and drugs are in vogue, fashion is in flux, and the party never seems to stop, Adams’ dreams of turning intimacy into stardom are about to collide with cold, hard reality.

We are taken along the memories of teenage skaterboy Alex, who is dragged into a police investigation of a mysterious death in Paranoid Park. Aan de Rand | Moderne Klassieker | Juni

Aan de Rand: films on The Edge of Life, de moderne klassieker van de maand juni, gaat over de rand van het leven, niet als schokkend plot-element, maar als iets wat de personages met zich meedragen, waar ze naartoe bewegen of vandaan proberen te vluchten.

In Peppermint Candy (1999) wordt een leven achteruit afgespeeld totdat de onschuld die eraan voorafging zichtbaar wordt. In Taste of Cherry (1997) trekt een man door de heuvels buiten Teheran op zoek naar iemand die bereid is hem te begraven en vindt onderweg gesprekken die hij nooit zocht. In No Home Movie (2015) filmt Chantal Akerman haar moeder, een Holocaustoverlevende, in haar appartement in Brussel. Het is een film over afstand en nabijheid, over wat overblijft als iemand verdwijnt. Kort na de release nam Akerman haar eigen leven. Ze was 65. In The Virgin Suicides (1999) worden vijf zussen steeds verder teruggedrongen in het huis van hun ouders, weg van de wereld, totdat er niets meer overblijft om naar terug te keren. Verschillende films uit verschillende culturen en tijdperken, die elk op hun eigen manier weigeren de rand als eindpunt te behandelen en hem in plaats daarvan tot uitgangspunt te maken.

Iranian Left Bank Cinema | Shorts Program | 10th of June

Kriterion is pleased to welcome for the special shorts programme Iranian Left Bank Cinema.

“Left Bank is an active center dedicated to non-fiction cinema. Since 2018, it has officially pursued its activities in the field of non-fiction cinema with a focus on education, production, and filmmaking. Left Bank is a collective, self-governed, and non-affiliated cinematic entity that seeks—through the adoption of a council-based structure—to dismantle conventional modes of film production and vertical, hierarchical models of education.

To date, Left Bank has produced and screened dozens of films in the field of non-fiction cinema, with a particular emphasis on documentary and experimental practices. Its educational and production workshops recruit participants annually through open calls for multi-month programs and engage in the continuous production of films, whose creative processes extend uninterrupted until their public screening.

Among the core principles of Left Bank are the screening, retrieval, and rediscovery of marginalized and abandoned peaks of non-fiction cinema; a revolt against dominant and stabilized cinematic grammar; the elimination or reduction of delay as a defining condition of cinema; the revival of collective and reactive filmmaking; opposition to cinematic centralism; resistance to the hegemony of narrative cinema; the removal of hierarchies in both education and production; the redefinition of cinematic economics; and the creation of no-budget or low-budget works through lightweight tools and minimal means.”

Kriterion is proud to welcome Sprouts Film Festival back for its fifth edition this June, a festival that, over five years, has grown into a vital platform for ecocinema, socially critical storytelling, and bold debut filmmaking!

Sprouts has expanded into a citywide event, now spanning six venues across three Amsterdam districts: Kriterion, Studio/K, De Uitkijk, Droog, MidWest, and QRU! A five-year milestone is worth marking, but the Sprouts team would be the first to say the work now feels more necessary than ever! At a time when “autocrats, tech bros, and far-right factions continue to wreak havoc on our planet, disrupting ecosystems and undermining international law and human dignity,” the filmmakers in this year’s programme respond with courage and uncompromising vision.

Carceral Jigs & A Sod State | de Appel | 31st of May

Eoghan Ryan’s two films depart from specific moments and movements in the history of Ireland: the mutations of contemporary right-wing nationalism (Carceral Jigs) and the post-Brexit moment of the early 2020s (A Sod State). His films often deploy found and borrowed footage, fast-paced editing, and elements of puppetry, horror or propaganda, as a critical gateway into the ways in which conflict is shaped by popular media and remote spectatorship.

A Sod State premiered in 2021 at the Open Studios of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam during Ryan’s residency, and it has been shown various times ever since. The Kriterion screening is the Dutch premier of Carceral Jigs, Ryan’s latest film, which was commissioned in 2025 for the 41st EVA International - Ireland's Biennial of Contemporary Art.

The screening event and the conversation afterwards with Eoghan Ryan is part of the exhibition project state of us, a collaboration between de Appel Amsterdam and EVA International.

de Appel is an exhibition space, a curatorial and pedagogical lab, and an arts library and archive that was founded in 1975.
