g the relocation of the hospital Wilhelmina Gasthuis now the AMC – Academic Medical Center – artists, small business owners and residents have shaped and preserved the unique character and special site of WG in Amsterdam. Today a large number of artists are living and working on the grounds, including those who are part of atelierWG (in Pavilions 18 and 19) the initiator of the airWG residency program. atelierWG has developed numerous art activities, hosted exhibitions, including monthly open studio events, and has organised international exchanges with artists’ collectives. It offers an interdisciplinary project space and stage for the arts, with a lively programme of exhibitions, performances, concerts, lectures and discussions. AirWG is organised and coördinated by the airWG team, a group of visual artists, who are interested to host an (inter)national artist in residency program at their studio building in Amsterdam: atelierWG board member Antoinette Nausikaä, Anthea Bush, Tatjana Macic, Els van der Graaf, Hugo Palmar, Rob ter Haar.

🌺 airWG welcomes Cui Yuxuan 🌺 artist-in-residence 🌺 April-June 2026 🌺

Join us this Thursday at the airWG studio for a meet and greet with our artist-in-residence, Cui Yuxuan.

🗓️ 7 May 2026, 17:00-19:00
📍M.v.B.Bastiaansestraat 37, Amsterdam

This spring, airWG welcomes visual artist and storyteller Cui Yuxuan as artist-in-residence. Her practice is driven by fieldwork and affective encounters with landscapes, archives and overlooked histories, where storytelling becomes a method to sense what official narratives leave behind.

During her residency at airWG, Yuxuan will develop Cheng Chia Tun Manuscripts, responding to a sketchbook secretly made by Dutch Major General H.J.D. de Fremery while imprisoned in Japanese POW camps in Northeast China. This project traces his forced migration route from Southeast Asia to Northeast China.

At the open studio meet and greet, Yuxuan will share recent work, field notes and stories from her research journey. She will also prepare classic homemade dishes from her hometown — Northeast Chinese Style Crudités and Rice Wrap.

We look forward to welcoming you!

❄️ airWG welcomes Izzy Lee ❄️ artist in residence ❄️ January-March 2026 ❄️

Izzy Lee (b. 1996, KR) is a visual artist working across video, scultpure and installation, based in Amsterdam and Seoul.

Lee creates “female alien” figures that exist on the fringes of society, evolving within imagined spaces. These environments blur the boundaries between reality and fiction, offering a lens into peripheral beings. Her work explores displacement and identity, focusing on interplay between external environments and internal experiences. Fluid, constantly shifting characters traverse these landscapes, reflecting on the psychogeographical tension between belonging and estrangement.

She studied VAV-Moving Image at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her works have been presented at IFFR in 2026, NeMA and Li-ma present (in collaboration with CBK Zuidoost) in 2025.

🍁 airWG welcomes Songül Karakoç 🍁 artist in residence 🍁 October-December 2025 🍁

Songül Karakoç (b. 1991, Istanbul) is a visual artist and graphic designer. She completed her MA in Graphic Design at Yeditepe University in 2018 after graduating from both the Mathematics-Computer Sciences and Graphic Design departments at Bahçeşehir University. She has worked as a graphic designer in various creative industries and has been working remotely as an art director at Rafineri Advertising Agency since 2021. At the same time, she continues to create artistic works as an independent artist in Istanbul.

Her artistic practice mainly revolves around exploring the concepts of trust, communication, and belonging through human reactions in everyday life by merging lens-based media and performance. She also interested in abandoned objects, places and hardware stores.

During her residency, she will focus on the editing process of her ongoing project Have A Seat, which explores “special” seating preferences in outdoor spaces. Originally begun as a reflexive act of photographing unusual seating objects encountered on the streets, the project later evolved into a video work during her residency at SomoS Arts in Berlin earlier this year. The video will delve into the stories behind these preferences, the diversity of seats, and the factors that shape them. It will also ask what they may reveal about human behavior and how they connect to the idea of creating personal space in outdoor environments. Following its Berlin and Istanbul chapters, she now aims to conclude the project with its final stage in Amsterdam.

Thank you all for coming to The Wind Blows Where It Wants, a group proposal by with the support of the participating artists Oriol Cabarrocas, Luca Calderó, Jacob Dwyer, Els van der Graaf, Mariana Jurado, Francisca Khamis, Frédéric Liver, Pau Masclans, Lorenzo Modica, María Nolla, Clara Pallí, Nikolaus Urban, Andoni Zamora and Marieke Zwart.

As part of the series, the exhibition was imagined as a reversed breakout plan, drawn from the surface to the subsoil. Considered with a system of relations between the works of the artists and the ground floor of the former hospital, the group show was an escape route itself conceived with different approaches and practices.
