‘What would I do if I ever met her in person’ is what Micha asked me once,referring to his female alter ego Moustachella. This question marks the starting point of KINGS & QUEENS, the photographic project about the man and his inner queen; his female half: his drag. The scope of this portrait series focuses beyond the drag queens’ visual identity as merely ex*********st extravaganza. By portraying the man besides his drag, KINGS & QUEENS present the artists inside/ behind the spectacular female display. And by having both man and drag interact casually, a demonstration is given about how are these two individuals, both wrapped up in the same person, are intertwined. Together with a team of professional creatives, with my project KINGS & QUEENS, I construct intimate portraits of Drag Queens, accompanied by their other (male) half. Both halves are seamlessly arranged together in one photograph utilizing the superb and seamless ways of photomontage, simulating ultimate realness. KINGS & QUEENS has its roots in Moustachella’s home base, Amsterdam, but in the year to come, this project will expand beyond Dutch borders and concentrate on the international community of Drag Queens.
