"First We Take Manhattan" is a metaphor for a long-awaited uprising, representing a radical desire to dismantle and transform established cultural, financial, and ideological systems from within.
Cohen famously described the track as a "terrorist song," but clarified he meant it in the sense of "psychic terrorism". It captures the mindset of an iconoclast or reformer—someone driven by an uncompromising, relentless vision to upend the status quo after enduring years of dismissal.
