STEIM’s future is uncertain. After years of budget cuts, our main funders have now decided to no longer support STEIM at all anymore. It is sad, very sad. And it is confusing as well. Some said we were too innovative with our new plans and it was not clear what the outcomes would be, others said we were not innovative anymore. Very confusing, indeed. Anyway… our current funding ends this year, which is less than two months from now.
STEIM, as a formal organisation, will cease to exist, and we are still thinking about different scenarios to keep our ideas and our practices alive. Some of our projects and activities will continue, sometimes on a smaller scale, but typically involving existing partners and hopefully new ones as well. We are dedicated to continue our work, maybe under the same name, maybe under a different one, but definitely building on the ideas that we have been developing recently. It may take a while to figure out a new approach, but we will not give up. If you want to be part of this elusive new journey, let us know… 😉
2020 has been a bad year for so many of us. Covid-19 even prevents us to throw a ‘STEIM is dead. Long live STEIM’ party to thank everyone we have worked with over the years. For now, this is it: a boring couple of paragraphs with the sad news. But the feeling of gratitude towards all our friends and partners is no less sincere.
So… THANK YOU!

For their project ‘Spiegelstem’ Monobanda is working together with STEIM (amongst others) to create ways for children and young people to better cope with agression and feelings of discomfort. This (dutch) video shows how and why we are working on a tool to translate those feelings, expressed in sound (voice), to a visual expression.

You can now visit the second edition of macroTONE until the 6th of November at Marineterrein Amsterdam. In collaboration with Marineterrein Living Art Lab we present the work of Gil Delindro called 'Harbour'. This work is the second piece in a new series of works that explore the relation between "Industrial and Organic geographies". It departs from detailed sonic recordings of the Amsterdam coastline and its most important harbours. This makes it perfect for macroTONE, which focuses on realizing a sound art work for a specific architecture.
Event: macroTONE #2
Location: Living Art Lab: Marineterrein
Opening hours: 3PM to 6PM (on thursdays, fridays & saturdays)

The last couple of months STEIM (amongst others) has been working together with Monobanda for their project ‘Spiegelstem’. This work aims to create a safe and playful space for children and young people to better cope with aggression and feelings of discomfort. The goal is to work towards a working prototype as a tool to translate those feelings, expressed in sound (voice), to a visual expression. A very promising research within art, science and education! Coming to Amsterdam this weekend? For two more weeks you can visit MacroTONE (on thursdays, fridays & saturdays). A sound art work specially designed for the former shooting range of Marineterrein Amsterdam. Come and visit us between 3PM and 7PM at one of Amsterdams beautiful and historic spots.
The third and last part of our 'Careful Conversations' Podcast series is now online on Soundcloud. (Only in Dutch.)
In this trilogy we talk about what (sound)art can do in the realms of health care and what the task for an artist can be to help improve the quality of life.

During his residency at STEIM, Daniel Maalman researches the sound characteristics of materials and the different ways in which these materials can be played. He developed 8TET1, a standalone installation for the microTONE collection at STEIM. This paved the way for 21TET1. The second working prototype for The Foundscape Orchestra: a series of instruments based on the sound of materials. Learn more on our website: https://steim.org/residency-daniel-maalman/

Second call for sound art professionals!
Steim Amsterdam invites sound artists (professionals) to participate in macroTONE. After our first open call a special committee selected two entries: the sound art works of Geert-Jan Hobijn and Radboud Mens. Together with Marineterrein Amsterdam we are looking at the possibilities to continue as planned which means we hope to show these works in june. The works for this second open call will be shown in september.

STEIM is a ‘network laboratory’ for experiments in sound art and electronic live performance. Since 1969, STEIM has been a hotspot for an international community of composers, musicians, visual artists and scientists. Even though technology has always played an important role in STEIM’s activities, the focus has always been on artistic results and value. The value of a new electronic instrument lies ultimately in its effect on performance, the meaning of sound art lies in the experience of the artwork.
STEIM collaborates with artists and other professionals to investigate the boundaries between art, technology, and society. Currently, STEIM’s research agenda is focussed on different contexts for music and sound: relationships with physical space, music and sound in (dys)functional objects, and the role of sound and music in other sectors in society.
STEIM coaches artists who work on their own projects and provides studios, a software and a hardware workshop, and a guesthouse for resident artists. STEIM also exhibits sound art on its own premises and in collaboration with different venues, using the brand name TONE. The sound art exhibition is called homeTONE and can be visited on request.
STEIM’s ambition is to connect many different networks of artists, makers, scientists, students, and cultural and scientific institutions. STEIM offers a Master’s Degree in ‘Instruments and Interfaces’ in collaboration with the Royal Conservatory in the Hague, and provides educational services to art schools and conservatories like the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht, the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the TU/Eindhoven. STEIM works closely with the Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ in Amsterdam and with organisations like Sonic Acts, FIBER, and TodaysArt as presentation partners for performance and sound art experiments.
STEIM’s formal procedure for artists who are interested in a residency is as follows: write us an email (knock(at)steim(dot)nl) with your plans or ideas and we will get back to you.
