Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century

Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century O18c. is one of the most prominent period instrument orchestras in the world. He was born in Amsterdam and studied musicology at the university there.

Once the world's most famous recorder player, Frans Brüggen is now considered among the foremost experts in the performance of eighteenth century music. At 21, he was appointed professor at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague and later held position as Erasmus Professor at the Harvard University and Regents Professor at the University of Berkeley. Yet, as Luciano Berio wrote, he was "a musician w

ho is not an archeologist but a great artist". In 1981, Brüggen and friends founded the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, which consists of some fifty-five members from more than twenty different countries. Five times a year the orchestra assembles to go on tour. The musicians, who are all specialists in eighteenth and early nineteenth century music, play on period instruments on contemporary copies. The wide-ranging repertoire this orchestra has recorded for Philips Classics and nowadays for The Grand Tour / Glossa includes works by Purcell, Bach, Rameau, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Chopin. In August 2014 the Orchestra had to say farewell to Frans Brüggen. The inspired collaboration with the Orchestra's founding father came to an end but Brüggens inspiration will remain and lead the Orchestra in the years to come. The Orchestra decided to continue the tradition of five projects a year, now inviting guests and guest conductors.

We have gotten some very nice reviews for the 'By her absence' program. Thanks to everyone who came and see and listen to this concert.

"That it was worthwhile to blow the dust of centuries away was proven on Thursday evening at the Leiden City Concert Hall, where Hetherington performed together with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under the energetic direction of Benjamin Perry Wenzelberg."
⭐⭐⭐⭐ - de Volkskrant

"The multitalented Benjamin Perry Wenzelberg (conductor, pianist, singer, and composer) leads the orchestra sometimes standing, then seated behind the fortepiano, but always energetically. The orchestra lives up to its name: the 18th-century music buzzes and gleams."
⭐⭐⭐⭐ - NRC

"This concert program was therefore not only a musical experience, but also a cultural-historical experiment. The more we know about the past beyond the established canon, the better we understand the present. In that respect, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century and Kate Moore made a powerful statement."
- De Nieuwe Muze

"This work deserves to become a Radio 4 hit, and as far as I’m concerned, it should displace both the kitsch of the Magnificat by Karl Jenkins and the mannered style of the one by Arvo Pärt."
- Operamagazine about Kate Moore's work.

There is a lot (a LOT!) of energy in the three Beethoven pieces in this program. The whole idea of BEETHOVEN 1807 is the idea that the fourth symphony, the fourth piano concerto and the Coriolan Overture were premiered in a private setting in the house of Prince Joseph Franz von Lobkowitz in March of 1807. Come and join us for a reconstruction of that night in PHIL. Haarlem tonight or tomorrow in Amare - Den Haag (Nieuwe Kerk).
