We believe in the power of storytelling and art as a way to educate and inspire beyond historical facts. Beyond Walls explores this question through heritage and research projects, contemporary art & visual storytelling. BEYOND WALLS is an Amsterdam-based and globally active platform of independent curators, researchers, artists and (visual) storytellers. Our mission is to contribute to a more ope

n and empathetic world by creating spaces where people and ideas thrive. We initiate, develop and curate projects that raise awareness, challenge views and spark critical conversation and co-creation. Beyond the walls of museums, institutions and our own frames. We develop and curate heritage projects through an intersectional, diasporic lens, work independently and in collaboration with a diversity of scholars, artists, initiatives and partners like Het Rijksmuseum, Framer Framed, TED, Erasmus Huis Jakarta, Read My World, Het Tropenmuseum, Amerpodia, Open University and more. In our projects we center underrepresented voices and highlight the entanglement of personal stories, colonial history and contemporary global realities. Involving the impact and afterlives of colonialism and issues related like racism, xenophobia, homophobia, gender diversity, identity and belonging. We operate with a diverse team of independent professionals. SHARING BEYOND THE COLLECTION

What is being remembered at the memorial altar initiated by Manuwi C. Tokai, and what does it ask of us today?
 On the 24th of January we welcome you to gather with Beyond Walls Collective and different communities to share beyond the collection at the memorial altar in the Wereldmuseum Amsterdam. The memorial altar, initiated by Manuwi C. Tokai, serves as a site of remembrance for the ancestors held in the museum’s collection. The altar is also a place for stories to unfold. The memorial altar will be present until mid‑February.

Together we will explore the urgency behind and beyond the altar, addressing what remains unseen in museum depots. Through a sharing session as part of Beyond The Collection, we engage with different stories connected to the memorial altar and ancestral belongings from Toraja, Maluku, and Timor. And we hope to hear from you as well! 🙏🏽🫵🏽🫶🏽

This gathering is an invitation to slow down, to listen, and to collectively sense what these stories about ancestral remains might ask of us today. What emerges when we stand before an altar that holds memory, grief, resistance, and ongoing connection? What becomes possible when we share knowledge, stories, and lived experiences beyond institutional frames?

We will reflect on how communities relate to ancestral belongings and how we can build practices that honor the people, lands, and lineages connected to them. Together we imagine what it means to move Beyond The Collection toward relationships rooted in care, responsibility, reciprocity, and healing.

You are warmly invited to bring your voice, your questions, your stories, and your presence. The altar is a living space, and it grows through all of us.

📝De afgelopen maanden hebben we samen met Stadsmuseum Tilburg bijzondere ontmoetingen gehad, op plekken in de stad waar verhalen, herinneringen en toekomstbeelden elkaar raken. Dat gebeurde dankzij de bewoners van Tilburg! 🫶🏽

Tijdens de verschillende programma’s die we samen organiseerden werden de ruimtes gevuld met solidariteit, moed, kwetsbaarheid, nieuwsgierigheid en verbinding. De avonden en middagen in Lochal, Cinecitta, Wijkcentrum de Symfonie, Sociaal Cultureel Centrum De Schalm in Ons Koningsoord, Textiel Museum, Wijkcentrum de Poorten, Yonder werden plekken van inspiratie, dialoog en creativeit!
Bewoners en studenten van Tilburg brachten eigen tastbaar erfgoed en deelden ervaringen, vragen en perspectieven mee, waardoor de stad een stukje completer werd. 🔑

Benieuwd naar de portretten van Tilburgers en hun tastbaar erfgoed? 👀 Dit is te zien bij TijdLab in LocHal Tilburg en te lezen via de website van Geheugen van Tilburg. 💻

Ook wandelden we samen door Tilburg, langs plekken waar het (post)koloniale verleden nog altijd voelbaar is. We ontwikkelden een digitale wandeling dat laat zien hoe geschiedenis niet alleen in archieven leeft, maar in de straten en in elkaar.

We danken de bewoners van Tilburg en alle verhalen. Voor de bereidheid om samen te bouwen aan een stad die al haar geschiedenissen én de toekomst durft te dragen. En zijn trots dat wij hier een onderdeel van mochten zijn.

We eindigen de week met een paar highlights voor in de boeken! 📚👏🏽 We kijken terug op een paar mooie dagen met studenten van Yonder Lifestyle & Creative Industries.

Samen met de theatermakers, content creators en grafische ontwerpers van de toekomst maakten we verhalen zichtbaar over het (post)koloniale verleden – en hoe dat nu nog doorwerkt.

Uit deze ontmoetingen ontstonden rauwe, eerlijke, kwetsbare en krachtige performances – gemaakt door de artiesten zelf!

👉🏾Wij, leden van de Nederlandse en Belgische cultuursector, wensen niet langer aan de zijlijn te blijven staan van oorlogsmisdaden, misdaden tegen de menselijkheid en een door alle gezaghebbende instituties erkende genocide op het Palestijnse volk.

Met onmiddellijke ingang, en in navolging van aanhoudende oproepen van Palestijnse kunstenaars en de Palestijnse samenleving, stellen wij een culturele boycot in van de Israëlische staat en van alle Israëlische instellingen en bedrijven. Uitgezonderd zijn organisaties die niet medeplichtig zijn aan schendingen van het internationaal recht en zich ondubbelzinnig hebben uitgesproken tegen de genocide, de juridisch illegaal verklaarde bezetting en de apartheid.

De boycot is expliciet niet gericht op individuen of hun afkomst, dus ook niet op Joden, of op Israëli’s als zodanig, maar op de medeplichtigheid van Israëlische instellingen en bedrijven aan de mensenrechtenschendingen jegens de Palestijnen.

👉🏾More than 1000 Dutch and Belgian artists and over 300 cultural institutions have currently committed to boycotting Israel. They no longer wish to remain on the sidelines in the face of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and a 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 of the Palestinian people — recognised by all authoritative institutions.

🍉What does the cultural boycott mean? Artists and institutions who join:

• Publicly declare: we support the boycott
• Withdraw from art projects funded by the Israeli state (or complicit organisations)
• Refuse to enter into new collaborations with such parties
• Reject initiatives that present Israeli and Palestinian perspectives as ‘equal’ without addressing the history of injustice and oppression

The boycott targets the Israeli state and all Israeli institutions and companies. Exempt are organisations not complicit in violations of international law and that have explicitly spoken out against the 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦, the illegal occupation, and the system of apartheid. The boycott is explicitly not aimed at individuals or their background — and therefore not at Israelis as such — but at the complicity of Israeli institutions and companies in human rights violations against Palestinians.

📣As an art and research collective rejects the illusion of being ‘neutral’ or ‘objective’. The cultural sector is not a neutral space and art and culture must not be used to normalize or aestheticize oppression and injustices. Join collective action and make solidarity visible.

✨We shared how our collective brings together research, art, and storytelling as a method to strengthen stories beyond institutional archives and dominant narratives, and how film plays an essential role in this process. Not only to make stories visible, but also to build our own tables, connect communities, and express our perspectives on history and the future in a non-institutionalized environment: for, by, and with (diaspora) communities.✨

Wist je dat we tijdens alle themaprogramma’s in Tilburg ook een sokkel meenemen en uitlichten? Tilburgers vertellen aan de hand van bijzondere erfstukken en andere objecten verhalen die zo, letterlijk en figuurlijk, in de spotlight staan. Want ook huizen zijn plekken van erfgoed, herinnering en bijzondere verhalen, waar in woonkamers, keukens en op zolders vaak verhalen verscholen liggen die het verdienen om gehoord te worden.

We leggen deze verhalen vast voor het Geheugen van Tilburg, waar ze tijdens onze programma's prachtig in beeld worden gebracht door fotograaf Armando Ello. 📸

✨ En wat een bijzondere verhalen en erfstukken hebben we tot nu toe al mogen vastleggen! Lees zo het verhaal van mevrouw Kathleen Janssen-Kimpoel, dat zij tijdens een van onze programma’s deelde. Ze nam een Javaanse wikkelrok van haar oma mee, een erfstuk dat haar niet alleen verbindt met haar familiegeschiedenis, maar ook met de koloniale migratiegeschiedenis van Indonesië naar Suriname en Nederland.

“Tijdens het programma stond ik tussen het publiek, met de jarik omgeslagen zoals mijn oma het ooit deed. In dat moment voelde ik haar aanwezigheid. Haar hand op mijn rug. Haar zachte stem. Ik vertelde hoe de rok jarenlang stil in de kast had gelegen. En hoe hij nu weer spreekt. Niet alleen over mij en mijn oma, maar over de vrouwen vóór ons, die de reis maakten van Indonesië naar Suriname, en van daaruit naar Nederland. De jarik is geen mode. Ze is herinnering. Ze is taal. We’ve been thriving, shining, playing, yes, and also holding space for truth, grief, resistance, and joy. 💔♥️🤝
From the kitchen 👩🏽‍🍳 to the streets, to the studio👷🏽from the archives👩🏼‍🔬📚to the forts, from Amsterdam, Budapest, Tilburg, Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Makassar, Maluku, Rote, Kupang and Toraja…we’ve been showing up real, rooted, and unapologetic.💯

This summer, we’re slowing down to go deeper and rest.
Taking time to reflect 🪞, to dream 💭🔮, to reimagine how we show up for each other, beyond walls, beyond buzzwords.

✨Op donderdag 26 juni organiseren Beyond Walls en Stadsmuseum Tilburg een publieksavond over Solidariteit en Verzet – toen én nu in de LocHal. Kom luisteren en meepraten over hoe Tilburgers, vroeger en nu, verbinding zoeken in de strijd voor gelijkheid en rechtvaardigheid. 💯

➖Tijdens deze avond klinken de stemmen van betrokken Tilburgers, onderzoekers, makers en verhalenvertellers. Met sprekers dr. Aspha Bijnaar en dr. Byron Adams over vijf jaar na het Black Lives Matter-protest in Tilburg en antikoloniaal verzet toen én nu. Moderatoren Glenda Pattipeilohy (Beyond Walls) en Tamira Waszink (Stadsmuseum Tilburg) gaan verder in gesprek met acteur, coach en maker Mandela Wee Wee die tijdens de BLM-demonstratie in Tilburg een krachtige toespraak hield. Ook spreken zij Marjo Hoogzaad van de AntiRacismeGroep (ARG) over solidariteit, verzet en collectieve verantwoordelijkheid. ARG is een onafhankelijke, niet-gesubsidieerde beweging die zich sinds de jaren ’80 hard inzet tegen racisme en discriminatie in Tilburg en omgeving.✨💪🏾

💫 Throwback to last month when the research and artistic exchange week of WANUA started! 🏁

Artists, researchers and storytellers Theoresia Rumthe, Djé-Rimo, Safa Liron, Hirah Sanada, Rachmat Mustamin, Tiga Batang Rumah and Louie Buana came together to explore WANUA as community, place, and the living relationship between people and environment. 👀❤️

Together we experienced a full week with different lectures, workshops, inspiration sessions and moments of contemplation, creation and participatory exchange in Amsterdam, Leiden, Vught, Eindhoven and Rotterdam. 🛣️

🕵🏽‍♀️We found out about the historical and contemporary connections between Fort Rotterdam, Makassar and Ambon, explored the deep-rooted connections and kinship between South-Sulawesi and Maluku through talks and interactive lectures by dr. Tamara Soukotta, historian drs. Wim Manuhutu and researcher, PhD candidate and storyteller Louie Buana. 👩🏻‍🏫🧑🏽‍🏫 And also by diving into the archives of Universiteit Leiden, and KITLV 🗄️🗃️ ánd ofcourse by diving into the kitchen of orang Bugis and Makassar and Maluku where we ate kapurung and papeda made by Azmah Musa. 👩🏽‍🍳

Since this exchange week the artists got inspired and were on to something… 👀 Something that will come alive this Thursday May 29 in Fort Rotterdam during Makassar International Writers Festival: WANUA Beyond home🔥🚀🪐
