Today we remember and celebrate artist Nan Hoover, whose work transformed space into sensation, and movement into memory. Her work continues to shift gently through time, still teaching us how to look more closely. Few artists understood the emotional and sculptural potential of light quite like she did. ✨

The contemporary visual arts and creative industry (BKCI) in Amsterdam is under immense pressure. Although BKCI institutions are highly regarded internationally and are indispensable to the city, conditions are becoming increasingly difficult. Recent research commissioned by the City of Amsterdam and MOKER reveals major financial problems and uncertainties at play behind the scenes.

In the Emergency Plan for Visual Arts and Creative Industries, on behalf of MOKER, we call for structural additional investments of €4.4 million per year and policy adjustments by the City of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam Arts Council, and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. This is necessary to strengthen the sector, give it a solid position within the municipal arts system, and offer prospects for development and growth.

Our movements are increasingly guided by data. What happens when artists use the same systems to question it?

In a new article, Marijn Bril reflects on the panel she moderated during Transformation Digital Art 2026, tracing a shift from human-centred navigation to distributed, algorithmic systems.

Looking at works by Esther P***k, Blast Theory , and Jan Robert Leegte, the piece also examines what it takes to preserve these evolving forms – where documentation, reconstruction, and even self-archiving infrastructures come into play.

As our movements become increasingly tracked and optimised, these works propose something else: getting lost and navigating beyond efficiency.

Pixel Pioneers at Museum Van Beuningen brings together pioneering artists who have shaped digital visual culture, from early experiments to immersive installations and interactive works.

At its centre is Horizons (2008) by Geert Mul, an installation that responds to each visitor’s movement and foregrounds the challenges of preserving software-based art. Its restoration builds on long-term collaboration and research with LI-MA, where Mul’s work has been central to developing approaches to sustainable media art conservation.

Alongside Mul, artists such as Suzanne Treister, Claudia Hart, and Feng Mengbo explore how technology shapes culture, power, and perception.

Day 1 of opened with big questions and generous discussions. How long should digital art really live? What does a β€œgood death” for digital data look like? And what does it actually mean to care for artworks that exist across platforms, formats, and time?
