We do exhibitions, events, workshops and we have a restaurant in which we serve very nice plant-based food. Since 1983 Mediamatic has concerned itself with cultural developments that foster new technologies, and new technologies that spur cultural developments. Now we are a hyper-local open house for art, new technologies and urban agriculture.

We’re welcoming artists in residence: Al-Wah’at collective(.collective).

Formed by Ailo Ribas(.bird), Gabriella Demczuk(), and Areej Ashhab() in 2022, Al-Wah’at is an artist-research collective committed to growing communal practices of care and repair in ecologies labelled “wastelands”.

Their work seeks to counter colonial and anthropocentric narratives around arid lands and invasive species by engaging with a diversity of knowledge, be they local, folk, scientific, or more-than-human, to promote a deeper understanding of these ecologies, especially in light of climate change. 🌵

Their project Wild Hedges investigates the ecological and socio-political complexities of the prickly pear cactus and cochineal insect across multiple geographies and temporalities, including Palestine, Mexico, and Spain. Addressing colonial practices that perpetuate cycles of harm within human and more-than-human communities, Wild Hedges delves into the material possibilities of the cactus and the cochineal in weaving, dyeing, printing, and cooking, using mythology and rituals to reaffirm entanglement with the land amid enclosure and dispossession.

During their residency at Mediamatic, they will be adapting this work to the landscape surrounding our Biotope. Don’t miss out on their design research and public programming, including workshops, Meet the Maker sessions, and a final presentation during the third week of June in our historical Sluisdeurenloods. ✨

One of the biggest mysteries of fermentation is the flavour of cocoa.

The ordinary chocolate that we are used to, from chocolate ci******es and easter bunnies to high quality supermarket chocolate, has been burnt on high temperatures and therefore lost some of its best flavours.

For this Aromathèque edition, María Salvadora Jiménez, will show us the special techniques that she uses to select the best cacao beans from all over the world. She collaborates with farmers and helps them to improve their harvest. She will tell us all about the process of selection and will reveal the secrets of high quality cacao. And of course she will let us taste the differences. 🍫

Welcoming new artist-in-residence: Ikram Hamdi Mansour ( )

Ikram is an architect, artist, and regenerative practitioner working with earth, ecology, and collective rituals.

During her residency at Mediamatic, she will explore the relationship between soil and water through material experiments and spatial research. 🧱

Her work examines the interdependence of these elements as forces shaping ecological and cultural systems. While soil embodies continuity and rootedness, water introduces movement and transformation. Together, they reveal processes of cohesion, erosion, and regeneration, challenging static ideas of territory, permanence, and belonging.

During her residency you can join her in:

- A workshop on building with earth

- Meet-a-Maker sessions where you can speak with
her one on one

We’re curious to see what things will be discovered and created during her time here! ✨

During the evening program of HABITS, year-long residents, , and will occupy the Biotope.

Marjolijn Boterenbrood will kick off the evening program. Meet her at the quay to plunge into the canal or navigate the water by raft, exploring the question: what will the future skin of our city look like?
Performance Time: 19:00 - 19:30

At our Aroma lab, Olfactory artist Frank Bloem invites you into The Hotbox to reclaim the ceremonial calm of to***co, where you can roll a “shagje” infused with scents ranging from pure botanicals to the synthetic ambergris once used by Dutch whalers.
Open Installation: 19:30 - 21:30

Transdisciplinary artist Luca Gerry Conte’s installation is investigating “What happened to the world?” “What happened to that child?”. When exploring the work, we encounter the need to build our own play-space by in-habiting, tasting, and reconfiguring what is given.
You can visit his work in the Clean Lab.

For the past months, Livia Rita has been in residence at Mediamatic, and little by little, the creatures have been taking over 🧚‍♀️

The Haptic Lab has transformed into a colourful atelier of latex, beads, fabrics, and half-born beings. Inside the barn, band and dance rehearsals are in full swing.

Through open calls and workshops, three local participants joined the , a growing collective exploring fluid embodiment, more-than-human identities, and creature world-building beyond fixed roles.

In the Aroma Lab, with assistance of scent artist Frank Bloem, custom fragrances were designed for each creature. Because a creature is never only a costume. It has skin, rhythm, purpose, and its own way of moving through the world.

This Friday, these worlds step out of the studio and onto the stage.

Don’t miss it!
