In ‘Day Break Rhythm Silence’ Ektor Ntourakos focuses on an inner courtyard of one specific housing complex in the south of Rotterdam, which facilitates private and rental households and small businesses, to explore the emergence of a new type of public space. By using the tools and methods of field recording Ntourakos captures sounds from the courtyard to reflect on the importance of an auditory conceptualization of public space. He collaborates with Bram Ieven, for the processing of the collected data, in a sound piece which consists of field recordings and ambient syntheses to highlight the sonic compositions in the social exchanges between the residents, but also between the residents and the material environment, as constitutive elements of public space.

Bram Ieven and Ektor Ntourakos collaborate in a sound installation to map the cultural and social interactions in the area of Rotterdam South. Concentrating on the inner courtyard of one specific housing complex, which facilitates private and rental households and small businesses, the installation ‘Day Break Rhythm Silence’ explores the emergence of a new type of public space. Starting from field recordings from the courtyard, Ieven and Ntourakos introduce ambient syntheses that highlight the sonic compositions in the social exchanges between the residents, but also between the residents and the material environment, as constitutive elements of a public space. The installation induces the visitors to conceive public space as a fluid and ambient social scape with an affective, aural presence that can invade even our most private spaces and institute its public and social rhythms at the heart of our own private lives.

Tonight 18:00-21:00 is the opening of Massa Mãe. At PuntWG, Inês and Aslı will present the beginning of their research into the relationship between bread making, cloth and its social-economic impacts. Ines will showcase textile studies that imprint the surroundings of Favaios and its bread-making rituals while reflecting upon cloth as a vessel, a shield and a carrier. Aslı will share a work-in-progress video project that documents her participation in the daily routine of the bakery with Rosario. She focuses her concerns on the relationship between the body and food, bringing attention to the ways in which physical repetition in bread baking influences the embodiment of the baker. Through their eyes, wheat becomes a broader subject than just bread, and functions as a vehicle to reflect on the future of our ecology, health and socio-economic stability.

Massa Mãe is a collaboration between interdisciplinary artist Asli Hatipoglu and textile artist Inês Queirós. The two artists started their journey together in October 2021 in Favaios, Portugal, where bread is an essential source of income and a cultural artisanal trade. In the post-pandemic reality of wheat scarcity, the two decided to dive into the socio-political issues around bread baking and work side by side with one of the local bakers named Rosario. The day would start at 4 am, preparing the dough needed to bake 600 loaves of bread a day while sharing stories and local wisdom.

‘Something to Hold in the Let Go’ is a q***r-collective-togetherness comprised of five artists who will spend a week at puntWG from Monday, 3 to Sunday, 9 October 2022. Our names are Clementine Edwards, Dagmar Bosma, Karin Iturralde Nurnberg, Raoni Muzho Saleh and Sophie de Serière. Within our practices we touch upon manifestations of decay, entropy and loss. Our shared interest is in a materiality that does not last or remain fixed, but rather that is in constant transformation.

Where do we find stability amidst the necessary falling apart of things? And how can we reverberate and echo alongside with this shakiness?  Queer-collective-togetherness is a process of disintegration and growth. We will approach the puntWG time thinking about the cyclical nature of our lives and practices. Our art practices give us something to hold onto and to ground with, and they allow us to relate to the world in ways q***rer than the social norm. At puntWG, we will take time to experiment with the creation of material possibility amidst decay.

We will host three public moments. On Thursday and Friday, we’re open to those curious to visit or join our collective making sessions. On Sunday we host a communal closing with food and drink. Please join us! Keep an eye on puntWG’s website or our IG (.thingtoholdintheletgo) for further details.

Join us this Saturday! 2 April, for the opening of "The Wealth of Nations" with Ana Bravo Perez and Bernardo Zanotta.

'The Wealth of Nations' is a duo exhibition by artist-filmmakers Ana Bravo Pérez and Bernardo Zanotta. The title is appropriated from Adam Smith's 1776 book, a classic in economics promoting theories for industrial progress in Europe and colonial exploitation of other parts of the modern world. Both Bravo Pérez and Zanotta present new film installations that juxtapose Smith's tale of European wealth with the perspective of the colonized nations, producing critical takes on the economic and fictional narratives that sustained European nation-building projects.

By Mónica Mays, Susan Ploetz, Jean-Francois Peschot and Tom K Kemp | Photo documentation by the exhibitors | There’s a hypothesis that the appendixes of Homo habilis and our earlier ancestors could emit and receive radiation, allowing for a form of remote feeling over long distances, something that became vestigial as the voice gained primacy. If a telephone ‘speaks with its ears and hears with its mouth’, as the riddle suggests, the appendix was able to talk without either or***ce, transmitting and receiving directly through the skin's pores. Stress can cause acid reflux to abrade and mute the vocal cords, and as the throat quietens, the appendix sings along to other voices. Appendix Songs is an exhibition touching on friendly abjection and sensing at a distance, with works by Mónica Mays, Susan Ploetz, Jean-Francois Peschot and Tom K Kemp, with a text by Radna Rumping.

SUSU — puntWG

In 2019, Good Neighbour (GN) proposed an exhibition that could be seen as a container for words, similar to a book. To make art as words, this was the invitation to ten artists and one writer to participate in Sufferin’ Succotash. Back then, different works were drafted, organized, selected and written. Due to the pandemic, the show was postponed and all the plans were delayed. Throughout 2020, this interruption opened time and space for new meanings and reconsideration. In its 2021 version, the works embraced slight adjustments and the exhibition became SUSU, a repetition of the original show, but including a few differences.

The title Sufferin’ Succotash was originally taken from Ron Padgett & Joe Brainard’s homonymous publication made in 1971. It referred to a trademark expression said back then by Silvester the cat, the Looney Tunes’ cartoon.

Photo documentation by Ilya Rabinovich | Enfleshed is a multisensory exhibition reflecting on shamanisms of Inner Mongolia and Manchuria (Northern China) in relation to the serious pollution, electromagnetism, heavy industry and rare-earth mining in the region, global capitalism and the artist’s own body.

Central in the exhibition is Kristiina Koskentola’s film, Flesh and Metal. Light and Oil. (2020) in which rituals such as for example the healing ceremony of Shaman Liu (who, embodied as her Fox God, healed the artist’s shaking hands) dialogue, drumming and singing intertwine with atmospheric electronic soundscapes and (industrial) landscapes. The film examines the potential of ‘non-living’ or 'spectral' subjectivities and time as active political and ethical actors and agencies. It searches for a deeper relationship with natural and spiritual worlds through alternative knowledges and explores the boundaries of human rationalism and knowledge production and the environmental injustice and slow violence of the logic of (global) capitalism. The film draws on dialogues with involved shamans, healers and musicians, local knowledge, lived experience, nonhuman knowledge and theorising by Karen Barad, Rosi Braidotti, Rick Dolphijn and Jussi Parikka.

puntWG will be transformed to a sensory environment that functions as incubator of other knowledge and experiences and as a space for healing.
