414 performers.
100+ visitors.
30 minutes of sound.

Yesterday, A Percussion Piece happened.

414 people climbed the tribune at NDSM wearing the faces of Belarusian political prisoners. 👥👤👥

They came with pots, cans, lids, buckets, sticks — ordinary objects turned into instruments. 📣🥄🥁📢

And for 30 minutes, they made noise.

Not as an audience.
Not as professional musicians.
As the artwork itself.

Hundreds of separate sounds became one unstable, powerful, living body.

Behind every mask was a real person.
Someone imprisoned. Someone silenced. Someone whose absence from public life has been made painfully normal.

For 30 minutes, it was impossible not to see them.

More than 100 people watched from below. Others stopped, listened, filmed, asked questions.

And then the sound ended.

The silence afterwards felt different.

This project was never only about making noise. It was about refusing to accept silence as normal.

***

To every one of the 414 people who stepped onto that tribune: thank you for giving your body, your time and your sound to someone who could not stand there themselves!🤝🎶📣📢🥁🥄

To everyone who came to witness it: thank you for watching👁️

Freedom can disappear much closer to us than we like to imagine.

Yesterday, at NDSM, hundreds of people chose not to look away.

This morning, A Percussion Piece was on NPO Radio 1.

Ilya Sharbitski spoke about why, this afternoon, people will gather at NDSM wearing the faces of Belarusian political prisoners — and why we chose sound.

Because a number like 1000 can remain abstract.

But when hundreds of people stand together, each representing someone whose voice has been taken away, and create one collective sound – the scale becomes something you can see, hear and physically feel.

As Ilya said on air: “Those people have no voice. It is important that we make noise for them.”

Today, we do exactly that.

Come to NDSM-werf, Amsterdam and become part of the artwork.

🥁 Bring an everyday object that can make sound.
🎭 We provide the masks.

Today, we make noise.

Not for spectacle. Not just for art.

But for people whose voices have been silenced — and for the freedom we too often take for granted.

Today, hundreds of people come together at NDSM to turn individual sounds into one collective voice.

Tomorrow, don’t just watch. Come make noise with us.

Maksim Znak knows what it means to have your freedom taken away. The Belarusian lawyer and writer spent more than five years in prison after being sentenced to 10 years; he was released in December 2025.

Tomorrow at NDSM, we turn solidarity into something physical: 1200 people, everyday objects, one collective sound…

No musical skills. No rehearsal. Just your presence.

Some people disappear from public life long before the world notices.

A name becomes a number.
A face becomes a photograph.
A person becomes “one of many”.

But no one is “one of many” to the people who love them.

This work is an attempt to close that distance — between here and there, between freedom and its absence, between knowing something happened and actually allowing yourself to feel it.

For a moment, someone else’s face becomes impossible to look away from.

When independent media becomes a prison sentence, it is not only individual lives that are affected. Society loses access to independent information.

Liudmila Chekina.
Andrei Aliaksandrau.
Siarhei Satsuk.

Three people connected to Belarusian independent media. Three long prison sentences.

On September 18, Liudmila Chekina and Andrei Aliaksandrau were released after more than five years behind bars. They were not allowed to return home: both were forcibly deported from Belarus to Lithuania.

Siarhei Satsuk remains imprisoned, serving an eight-year sentence.

Their circumstances are different. But together, their stories show the human cost borne by people working in independent media in Belarus.

Behind every mask is a real person.

Behind every name is a life that cannot be reduced to a sentence or a statistic.

These three names are just three out of thousands!
