The Summer Series, 'Hope Is the Thing with Feathers'
Ink and watercolour on paper, 100 × 70 cm

Thinking about the perspectives and stories we are told, or tell ourselves, and how they shape the way we imagine what lies ahead.

The future remains silent and unscripted, inviting curiosity, possibility, and awe rather than predictable certainty.

The title comes from Emily Dickinson’s poem

Making a door for my girl’s bedroom.
For me, making is also a way of thinking.

The door, once made, it determines what becomes accessible.

In this case, it will have my baby-girl feel safe, keep her teenage secretes, a door to slam when angry, or to open and invite someone in.

A door could also be a metaphor for the cultural and social structures that shape our lives...

Constructed structures that determine where we are allowed to enter, what we are able to see, and which forms of knowledge become accessible?

I am thinking of how the carpenter does not simply construct an object; they construct a threshold between inside and outside, openness and closure, one life and another.

The act of making is itself a way of thinking, and the material becomes a way of knowing....

Studio life and real life are never really separate. The work keeps changing. So do the kids. Now turned into teenagers, and suddenly the house needs a rewrite..

This is a new door ...

I understand the present moment as a transition rather than simply a crisis.

While critique often looks back at existing systems and their failures, my work is interested in participating in the uncertainty and openness of the present:

the moment in which choices about the future are still being made.

Back in Amsterdam and in the studio. A small work appeard..

We are not separate from nature, but an expression of it, participating in the same metabolism as every other living being.

Here a detail from the painting 'Exploring Embodied Refuge', acrylic on paper, 20 x 20 cm, 2023.

Every painting is a self-portrait because the self is never separate from the world. It emerges through relationships, histories, materials, and encounters. A painting becomes a trace of those entanglements.

MINERVA 120 x 90 cm Acrylic on raw linen glue and kaasdoek 2026

MINERVA asks what happens when knowledge continues to accumulate while wisdom struggles to keep pace, in both society and the self.

The headless figure of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, is both a self-portrait and an allegorical figure. She exists between civilization and psyche. Her body remains, occupying space and continuing to function, while the place traditionally associated with reason, imagination, ethical orientation, and self-awareness is absent.

Rather than depicting loss, the figure embodies a state of disorientation.
