We are pleased to announce the representation of Mahesh Baliga.

Born in 1982 in Karnataka, India, Mahesh Baliga received a BFA from Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore University (2005), and a postgraduate diploma in painting from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (2007) in Vadodara, where he currently lives and works. Baligaโ€™s first solo exhibition with Stevenson, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฆ, was held in Cape Town in March 2026. His second solo show with the gallery will take place in Amsterdam in early 2027.

Baliga is featured in 11 ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฌ๐˜ด, our third volume of artist interviews, to be launched in November. In her introduction to their conversation, Mosa Molapo writes that Baligaโ€™s practice conflates memory and dreams into quotidian moments. Although his work is situated in relation to the โ€˜Baroda Schoolโ€™, which synthesised Western modernist frameworks with traditional Indian representational styles, Baliga expresses the feeling of not belonging to one school, stating:

โ€˜Baroda gave me something else โ€“ space. Not just to learn, but to breathe through all the different schools, all the different ways of making. Bhupen Khakhar was a huge inspiration for me back then, as a student. His presence, his intensity โ€“ it stayed. And later, Nilima Sheikh. But Iโ€™ve taken from so many, and they donโ€™t always fit together. Different thoughts, different languages, all rubbing against each other inside me ... Maybe I belong to the in-between.โ€™

At Frieze London this week (14-18 October, booth D16), the gallery will present Baligaโ€™s ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜บ ๐˜•๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฉ๐˜ต (2003-26). Having returned to this scene in different iterations over two decades, this self-portrait of a moment spent in private celebration reflects both a characteristic undertone of melancholy and how his works emphasise โ€˜the small actions and rituals so normal they are overlookedโ€™.

Now open in Cape Town! ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ by Simon Gush, a solo exhibition by Simon Gush, his tenth with the gallery.

Reprising his mode of filmmaking, which hinges on the intersection of the essay and documentary, Gush combines analysis with living testimony and personal narration to take up the tension between history and place. Through still and moving images arranged as a constellation, ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ articulates the disorienting ways the past persists within the present, and how loss can become embedded in geographies, shaping our relationship to them long after the events themselves have passed.

The artist writes: In the land occupation in Cato Manor, the community has suffered through cycles of violence and assassinations. The sense of loss, of mourning, is held in those spaces. A kind of invisible presence, a return of the past that is felt but difficult to see. The photographs I have taken are a search for this, trying to glimpse at it, perhaps by not looking at it directly. The film ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต, ...๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ... is a collaboration with activist and Cato Crest commune member Phumelele Mkhize and journalist and author Niren Tolsi.

It was made as a way for each of us to share our sense of grief and mourning. For Phumelele it was a space to speak of her experiences in the land occupation. For Niren it brought returns of the history of forced removals in the area. For me it was a way to articulate echoes and returns that followed me in that space and haunted my camera.

The exhibition runs concurrently with ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ by Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi and ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ by Raรบl Rueda.

Now open in Cape Town! ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ, a solo exhibition by Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi.

The title, ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ, ๐˜Ž๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ refers, in part, to โ€˜figure-ground perceptionโ€™: the way our brain distinguishes a figure from its background โ€“ the words on a page, for example, from the paper beneath them. In this moment of informational chaos, with so much competing constantly for our attention, making this work helped bring into focus questions that feel important to me right now. What does it mean to fall? How do we respond when we fall? Or when someone else falls? And if we are falling together, can the care we offer one another, and the things we are able to imagine together, become a new kind of ground?

The exhibition runs concurrently with ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ธ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฆ by Simon Gush and ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ข ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ญ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ by Raรบl Rueda.

๐˜‹๐˜ฐ๐˜จ ๐˜‹๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜›๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜น, Georgina Gratrixโ€™s first solo exhibition in London takes places until 14 November.

โ€˜Gratrix presents a series of still lifes, tablescapes and portraits, emphasising the studio as both a place to create and as a space for domesticity, where her relationships with people, objects and painting are played out. Gratrix operates in the classical vein of observational painting - but she is subversive and her untamed, painterly exuberance harks to a strange and special world where she can flourish. With a masterful deftness, her still lifes and tablescapes become versions of self-portraits - played out through objects; like in the intimate studio scenes of Henri Mattisse (1869 โ€“ 1954), brimming with the artistโ€™s treasured possessions, we gain an insight into the departure points for Gratrixโ€™s painterly visions. The intimacy of domestic objects: ceramics, flowers, furniture and personal possessions become more than still-life subjects, acting as records of the artist, and her life which surrounds. With impasto paint trapping emotion one can feel that these paintings represent much more than one sees on first glance.โ€™

๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ by Wim Botha is on view in Amsterdam. The exhibition presents a โ€˜call and responseโ€™ dynamic around themes of serenity, acceptance, lament and wonder, spanning different systems of belief.

The bodhisattvas are carved from imbuia, an aromatic exotic wood โ€“ used by Bothaโ€™s father to make kitchen cabinets โ€“ inflecting memory and nostalgia, a personal dimension to the spiritual figures. In the accompanying framed photographic works, mountains, oceans and the sky extend the landscape of the bodhisattva into fragmented elemental moments in nature. The pairing of image and object creates isolated, infinite small universes where form dissolves into idea and the imaginal.
