Last week, we celebrated the opening of the new exhibition ART IS NOT A CRIME.

‘ART IS NOT A CRIME’ shows how Henry Chalfant’s lens captured graffiti culture at its true scale, pioneering the field and helping to lay the foundations for the Dutch graffiti scene. Join us for STRAAT Talks with Lynnée Denise and discover a new perspective on our new exhibition ART IS NOT A CRIME.

Drawing on decades of research in visual culture and work as a DJ Scholar, Lynnée Denise explores the cultural ecosystem surrounding graffiti in the 1980s. The talk considers graffiti, music, sound, and urban space as interconnected expressions of cultural and political life.

ART IS NOT A CRIME is now on view ✨

The opening offered a first glimpse through Henry Chalfant's eyes. Guided by flashlights, visitors moved through the exhibition, discovering life-size photographs of New York's graffiti-covered subway trains and the stories they preserve.

Meet Henry Chalfant at STRAAT 🌟

To celebrate the opening of ART IS NOT A CRIME, photographer and documentary maker Henry Chalfant will visit STRAAT for an exclusive signing session on Saturday, October 10, from 14:30 to 16:30.

Bring your Henry Chalfant book, print, or another item to be signed. You can also purchase selected books and merchandise in the museum shop on the day. Please note that a maximum of three items per person can be signed. The signing session is available on a first come, first served basis.

Henry Chalfant: Capturing graffiti culture, NYC, 1977–1987. The exhibition celebrates the legacy of photographer and documentary maker Henry Chalfant, whose work continues to shape graffiti culture to this day. It is the first major retrospective exhibition in the Netherlands to approach graffiti from its own documentary core.

For people from the scene, Henry Chalfant’s photographs are more than documentation. Together, his images became a visual record of a culture that was constantly changing.
