Blending the boundaries between art, craft, and architecture, Sheila Hicks is a long-time pioneer in the field of Fibre Art. She spent much of her early life on the road, which greatly influenced her career as an artist. She draws inspiration from weaving traditions worldwide, creating works that range from intimate handwoven pieces to large-scale installations like this one.

Sheila Hicks, die de grenzen tussen kunst, ambacht en architectuur doet vervagen, is al jarenlang een pionier op het gebied van textielkunst. Ze bracht een groot deel van haar jeugd door op reis, wat haar carrière als kunstenaar sterk heeft beïnvloed. Ze haalt inspiratie uit weeftradities over de hele wereld en creëert werken die variëren van intieme, handgeweven stukken tot grootschalige installaties zoals deze.

Hicks maakt al geruime tijd deel uit van de collectie van het Stedelijk. Kijk maar eens naar de laatste foto, waarop te zien is dat ‘Vague Verte’ al in 1974 in het museum te bewonderen was 👀

It is with great sadness that the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has learned of the passing of Yayoi Kusama.

Over a career spanning more than seventy years, Kusama became one of the most influential artists of her time. Her polka dots, pumpkins and mirrored environments became iconic elements of a highly distinctive visual language. In her work, the boundaries between the individual, their surroundings and infinity seem to dissolve. This is where the particular power of her work lies: in the sense of being part of something larger and connected to the world around us.

Through her work, Kusama transcended generations, cultures and national borders, touching people around the world. With the utmost respect, the upcoming retrospective exhibition has now become a posthumous tribute celebrating Kusama’s life and work. Her influence on art will endure.

Our thoughts are with her loved ones, her studio and all those who were close to her.

Met groot verdriet heeft het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam kennisgenomen van het overlijden van Yayoi Kusama.

In een carrière van meer dan zeventig jaar groeide Kusama uit tot een van de invloedrijkste kunstenaars van haar tijd. Haar polkadots, pompoenen en spiegelruimtes werden iconische elementen in een volstrekt eigen beeldtaal. In haar werk vervagen de grenzen tussen individu, omgeving en oneindigheid. Juist daarin schuilt een bijzondere kracht: het gevoel onderdeel te zijn van iets groters, en van verbondenheid met de wereld om ons heen.

Kusama wist met haar werk generaties, culturen en landsgrenzen te overstijgen en mensen over de hele wereld te raken. Met veel respect is haar aankomende overzichtstentoonstelling een postuum eerbetoon geworden, waarin we het leven en werk van Kusama vieren. Haar invloed op de kunst is blijvend.

Onze gedachten gaan uit naar haar naasten, haar studio en iedereen die nauw met haar verbonden was.

In ‘Yellow Plane in Dissolution’ by Kazimir Malevich, the yellow shape can be thought of as a colored plane moving through space. 🪐 The right-hand edge of the plane vanishes and appears to gradually disappear into the background. The suggested upward movement refers to aviation and technology, both themes that fascinated Malevich.

Malevich about the effect of colored shapes on a white ground: ‘A colored plane painted against a white background gives our consciousness an enormous awareness of space. It transports me to an infinite vacuum in which you experience the creative universe all around you’.

In ‘Yellow Plane in Dissolution’ door Kazimir Malevich kan het gele vlak worden begrepen als een gekleurd vlak bewegend in de ruimte waarbij de korte, rechterkant van dit vlak vervaagt en langzaam in de achtergrond lijkt op te gaan. 🪐 De gesuggereerde opwaartse beweging refereert aan luchtvaart en technologie, onderwerpen die de kunstenaar bezig hielden.

Malevich over het effect van gekleurde vormen op een wit vlak: ‘Een gekleurd vlak tegen een witte achtergrond geschilderd, geeft ons bewustzijn een enorm besef van ruimte. Mij voert het naar een eindeloze leegte waarin je overal om je heen het creatieve universum ervaart’.

This work by Jean Dubuffet was made in 1956. During the 1950s, Dubuffet also experimented with materials not usually used in painting, such as asphalt and glass. Over time, his style became more graphic, moving from single human and animal figures to increasingly complex compositions made of contour lines and brightly colored “cells”.

This work is currently resting in our depot. Through our ‘Off the Wall’ series, we’re bringing hidden gems from the collection back into the spotlight. Any requests for the next one?

Dit werk van Jean Dubuffet is gemaakt in 1956. In de jaren vijftig experimenteerde Dubuffet ook met materialen die in die tijd niet vaak in de schilderkunst werden gebruikt, zoals asfalt en glas. Na verloop van tijd werd zijn stijl grafischer: hij stapte over van afzonderlijke menselijke en dierlijke figuren naar steeds complexere composities, opgebouwd uit contourlijnen en felgekleurde ‘cellen’.

Dit werk bevindt zich momenteel in ons depot. Via onze serie ‘Off the Wall’ brengen we werken uit de collectie weer onder de aandacht die nu niet in het museum te zien zijn. Heb je suggesties voor de volgende?

New on view! What if an institution had a body? 🫀 For the seventh edition of Post/No/Bills, artist Kexin Hao transforms the corridor surrounding the Stedelijk’s monumental staircase into an imaginary body. The niches are filled with meter-high drawings of intestines, lungs, liver, stomach, and kidneys.

The organs illustrate how organizations select, organize, and determine what is and isn’t allowed in. Physical disruptions, on the other hand, represent resistance and dissent. From organ to organ, Hao shows how power is established and where it is countered.

Nieuw te zien! Wat als een instituut een lichaam had? 🫀 Voor de zevende editie van Post/No/Bills verandert kunstenaar Kexin Hao de gang rond de monumentale trap van het Stedelijk in een denkbeeldig lichaam. De nissen worden gevuld met metershoge tekeningen van darmen, longen, lever, maag en nieren.

De organen verbeelden hoe organisaties selecteren, ordenen en bepalen wat wel en niet binnenkomt. Lichamelijke ontregelingen staan juist voor verzet en tegenspraak. Van orgaan tot orgaan laat Hao zien hoe macht tot stand komt en waar die wordt tegengewerkt.

Today is World Photography Day. Who's your favorite photographer? 📸

Nan Goldin is widely known for photographing the world of her inner circle of friends with raw tenderness. This photograph, for example, is from the Cookie Portfolio, in which 15 photographs document Goldin's and Cookie Mueller's friendship. Here we see Cookie dancing with her lover Sharon at a club in the city of Provincetown.

Goldin's photos of herself and her friends are snapshots of intimacy and coupling, the quotidian and wild parties. She makes social issues visible and negotiable, even far beyond the art world, influencing generations of artists who came after her.

Nan Goldin staat erom bekend dat ze de wereld van haar naaste vriendenkring met rauwe tederheid vastlegt. Deze foto is bijvoorbeeld afkomstig uit de ‘Cookie Portfolio’, een reeks van 15 foto’s die de vriendschap tussen Goldin en Cookie Mueller vastleggen.
