What would a q***r utopia look like? That question is at the heart of Yamuna Forzani’s practice. With every piece she creates, she aims to express her deep appreciation for her community and celebrate them exuberantly. ❤️

Colorful textiles form the foundation for her art, as can be seen in this work, ‘Fluffy Maximalism’. She then incorporates textiles into other initiatives in the fields of art and design by organizing events, dance performances, fashion and costume projects, public art, and multifaceted installations.

Yamuna Forzani, ‘Fluffy Maximalism’, 2021

Hoe zou een q***r utopie eruitzien? Die vraag staat centraal in de praktijk van Yamuna Forzani. Met elk werk dat ze maakt wil ze diepe waardering voor haar gemeenschap uitdrukken, en hen uitbundig vieren. ❤️

Kleurrijk textiel vormen de basis van haar kunst, zoals te zien is in dit werk, ‘Fluffy Maximalism’. Vervolgens verwerkt ze textiel ook in andere initiatieven op het gebied van kunst en design door middel van het organiseren van evenementen, dansvoorstellingen, mode- en kostuumprojecten, openbare kunst en veelzijdige installaties.

This Saturday we're finally bringing Video Club back! 📼 On May 30, we present a special screening dedicated to Korean video art at the Stedelijk, followed by a conversation with many of the artists present.

Since its inception in 2018, Video Club has served as a screening series dedicated to the Stedelijk's renowned collection of time-based media art: food and drinks included 😉

Aanstaande zaterdag brengen we Video Club weer terug! 📼 Op 30 mei presenteren we in het Stedelijk een speciale filmvertoning gewijd aan Koreaanse videokunst, gevolgd door een gesprek met een groot aantal aanwezige kunstenaars.

Sinds de start in 2018 is de Video Club een filmreeks gewijd aan de gerenommeerde collectie tijdgebonden mediakunst van het Stedelijk: inclusief hapjes en drankjes 😉

'Wayward Lines. Consent Not to Be a Single Being' brings together works rooted in family histories, personal experiences, and cultural traditions. The exhibition is structured like the A- and B-side of a vinyl record. 📀

Side A: 'Consent Not to Be a Single Being', explores how worlds within Black communities are formed, and the stories, materials, sounds, and everyday practices that shape them. It approaches Blackness as a lived experience that cannot be contained within fixed categories. Side B: 'Wayward Lines' explores the tension between materiality, lines, figures, and form and looks for playful ways to engage differently with the canvas.

'Wayward Lines. Consent Not to Be a Single Being' brengt werken samen die putten uit familiegeschiedenissen, persoonlijke belevenissen en culturele tradities. De tentoonstelling is opgezet als de A- en B-kant van een lp. 📀

Kant A:'Consent Not to Be a Single Being', verkent hoe werelden in Zwarte gemeenschappen worden gevormd en welke verhalen, materialen, geluiden en alledaagse praktijken daarin een rol spelen. Het benadert Zwartzijn als een ervaring die zich niet laat vangen in vaste categorieën. Kant B: 'Wayward Lines' verkent het spanningsveld tussen materialiteit, lijnen, figuren en vorm, en zoekt naar speelse wijzen om het doek op een andere manier te benaderen.

"Creative to his core" was the description given of Kho Liang Ie by his first client. The first room of the exhibition 'Mid-Century Modernist' explores the multiple facets of Kho's illustrious career.

Here, for example, is his best-known furniture piece on view: the two-seater sofa he designed for Artifort in 1968. But Kho's work extends beyond interior design. You can see the front and back of his own wedding invitation which he designed himself, as well as a leperello with illustrations for an Interdesign project.

“Creatief tot in zijn pink", zo omschreef Kho Liang Ie's eerste opdrachtgever hem. De eerste zaal van de tentoonstelling ‘Mid-Century Modernist’ belicht de vele facetten van Kho's rijke carrière.

Hier is bijvoorbeeld zijn bekendste meubelstuk te zien: de tweezitsbank die hij in 1968 voor meubelmerk Artifort ontwierp. Maar Kho's werk reikt verder dan interieurontwerp. Zo kun je ook de voor- en achterkant van zijn eigen huwelijksuitnodiging bekijken die hij zelf ontwierp, evenals een leporello met illustraties voor een Interdesign project.

New on view! ‘i was empty and now i'm full’, a new work created by Nora Turato, can now be admired in Fonda Café. The work engages with the context of the museum café: a place where you eat and drink before, after, or in between viewing art.

The work responds to the feeling of being empty and becoming full, both in the mind and in the body. Sound is also an integral part of the work: a regular “mmmhh” can be heard, an expression of pleasure that emphasizes the physicality of the experience.

'i was empty and now i'm full', 2026 works as a closing piece to Turato’s recent series of works at the Stedelijk. This includes the video and sound installation ‘I hear you, I hear you’, the performance 'pool7' and its accompanying limited edition vinyl record, which can be purchased in the Museumshop from tomorrow.

Nieuw te zien! ‘i was empty and now i'm full’, een nieuw werk van Nora Turato, is nu te bewonderen in Fonda Café. Het werk speelt in op de context van het museumcafé: een plek waar je eet en drinkt voor, na of tussen het bekijken van kunst door.

Het werk speelt in op het gevoel van leegheid en verzadiging, zowel in de geest als in het lichaam. Geluid is ook een integraal onderdeel van het werk: er is regelmatig “mmmhh” te horen, een uiting van genot die de lichamelijkheid van de ervaring benadrukt.

‘i was empty and now i'm full’, 2026 fungeert als afsluiting van Turato’s recente reeks werken in het Stedelijk. Deze omvat de video- en geluidsinstallatie ‘I hear you, I hear you’, de performance ‘pool7’ en de bijbehorende vinylplaat, die vanaf morgen in de Museumshop in beperkte oplagen te verkrijgen is.

This detail is from Danh Vo's 'We the People', an exact replica of the Statue of Liberty (1886). Vo's work is composed of 250 copper pieces fabricated in Shanghai and now are part of various collections around the world.

Over time, the Statue of Liberty has become an enduring symbol of democracy and freedom. Vo reframes the original statue through acts of recreating, disassembling and distributing. He examines both the statue's symbolism and sculptural form, highlighting its surprising fragility.

Danh Vo, 'We the People (detail)', 2011 –2016 is now on view in the exhibition 'πνεῦμα (Ἔλισσα)’.

Dit detail is onderdeel van Danh Vo's werk 'We the People', een exacte replica van het Amerikaanse Vrijheidsbeeld (1886). Het werk bestaat uit 250 losse koperen fragmenten die Vo in Shanghai liet vervaardigen en nu onderdeel uitmaken van collecties wereldwijd.

In verloop van tijd is het Vrijheidsbeeld uitgegroeid tot een symbool van democratie en vrijheid. Door het beeld opnieuw te maken, uiteen te halen en te verspreiden, plaatst Vo het oorspronkelijke momument in een nieuw perspectief. Hij onderzoekt zowel de symbolische betekenis als de sculpturale vorm ervan, waarbij hij de onverwachte kwetsbaarheid van het monument benadrukt.
