What do you think this painting of a white dove and snake symbolizes? 🕊️

This work is made by Winfred Dania, whose works are vibrant and dynamic, mixing themes of spirituality, cultural history and mythology together. In our collection display 'Everyday, Someday and Other Stories' an entire room is dedicated to works inspired by spiritual world, of which this is one. A theme which you'll usually see recurring throughout these works is the natural world, whether that's animals, landscapes, the (human) body, or even everything combined.

Wat symboliseert dit schilderij van een witte duif en een slang volgens jou? 🕊️

Dit werk is gemaakt door Winfred Dania, wiens werken levendig en dynamisch zijn en thema’s als spiritualiteit, cultuurgeschiedenis en mythologie met elkaar vermengen. In onze collectie presentatie ‘Everyday, Someday and Other Stories’ is een hele zaal gewijd aan werken die geïnspireerd zijn door de spirituele wereld, waarvan dit er één is. Een thema dat je vaak terugziet in deze werken is de natuur, of het nu gaat om dieren, landschappen, het (menselijk) lichaam of zelfs een combinatie van alles.

The horse is a recurring motif in Sands Murray-Wassink’s work. The artist has produced a great number of horse sketches. This obsession arose because his grandfather forbade him from drawing horses when he was a boy: in his perception, that was something only girls did. The horse has since become a therapeutic totem and part of his daily practice.

Het paard is een terugkerend motief in het werk van Sands Murray-Wassink. De kunstenaar heeft een groot aantal paardenschetsen gemaakt. Deze obsessie is ontstaan doordat zijn grootvader hem als jongen verbood paarden te tekenen: volgens hem was dat iets wat alleen meisjes deden. Sindsdien is het paard een therapeutisch totem geworden en onderdeel van zijn dagelijkse praktijk.

Take a peek inside this installation with us 👀. Josef Frank was an Austrian-Swedish architect and designer, among the pioneers of the Viennese Modernist movement. Today he is best known for his furniture and vibrant pattern designs.

Frank left Stockholm during World War II to live in exile in New York, where he created this iconic 'Hawai' print. Frank had a lifelong interest in natural motifs and botany. In his pattern designs, he often combined flowers with fantastical species and flora from different seasons and cultures.

Neem een kijkje binnen deze installatie met ons 👀. Josef Frank was een Oostenrijks-Zweedse architect en ontwerper, en een belangrijke figuur binnen het Weense modernisme. Hij is vooral bekend om zijn meubels en levendige textielontwerpen.

Frank vluchtte tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog vanuit Stockholm naar New York. Daar ontwierp hij onder meer dit iconische patroon 'Hawai'. Zijn werk getuigt van een levenslange fascinatie voor natuur en botanie: Frank combineerde echte bloemen met fantasieplanten en bracht soorten uit verschillende seizoenen en culturen samen in één beeld.

You have until this Sunday to take a final glimpse at ‘Tomorrow is a Different Day. Collection 1980 – now'. We will be making a few changes to the collection, starting next week. A few works will be leaving the museum for now to make room for new ones.

Starting July 4, we’ll be unveiling the updated collection, and you’ll be able to admire the new works on display. One gallery will take a little longer to open, stay tuned to see what’s coming...💥

Je hebt tot aanstaande zondag de tijd om nog een laatste blik te werpen op ‘Tomorrow is a Different Day. Collectie 1980 – nu’. Vanaf volgende week brengen we enkele wijzigingen aan in de collectie. Een aantal werken zal het museum voor nu verlaten om plaats te maken voor nieuwe werken.

Vanaf 4 juli onthullen we de vernieuwde collectie en kun je de nieuwe werken bewonderen. Één zaal laat nog iets langer op zich wachten: houd ons in de gaten om te zien wat er gaat komen...💥

‘When people ask me what my work is about, I usually say, ‘It is.’ That seems more than enough to me.’ — Wim T. Schippers

Artist Wim T. Schippers (1942–2026) passed away on June 10. Irony and humor are central to the sculptures and installations that Wim T. Schippers has been creating since the early 1960s. His work often features a wondrous mix of magnified elements from everyday life and indefinable forms. He responds to the grand gesture of Abstract Expressionism, which was popular in the early 1960s.

It was primarily through his absurd and chaotic television shows, such as Hoepla, Van Oekels Discohoek, and the Fred Haché Show, that he gained popularity among the general public in the 1960s and ‘70s. Like his sculptures, paintings, and installations, these TV shows were acquired by the Stedelijk Museum; they’re now part of the collection, and regularly on view.

At the end of March this year, Wim T. Schippers stopped by the Stedelijk to view the small room we had specially arranged with his work. Featuring ‘Mnemosyne’ and ‘The Lump,’ both from 1966, as well as the very first famous episode of the television program Van Oekel’s Disco Corner. In it, Donna Summer sings her hit The Hostage, during which she is repeatedly interrupted by Ir. Evert van der P*k, who answers the phone in her place and throws the entire performance into disarray. Wim T. Schippers could still chuckle about it. With his passing, we lose one of the most striking figures in contemporary art.

Op 10 juni is kunstenaar Wim T. Schippers (1942 - 2026) overleden. Ironie en humor staan centraal in de sculpturen en installaties die Wim T. Schippers sinds de vroege jaren 60 maakt. In zijn werk zie je vaak een wonderlijke mix van uitvergrote elementen uit het dagelijks leven en ondefinieerbare vormen. Hij reageert op het grote gebaar van het abstract expressionisme, dat populair was in die vroege jaren 1960.

Vooral met zijn absurde en chaotische programma’s voor televisie, zoals Hoepla, Van Oekels Discohoek en de Fred Haché Show krijgt hij in de jaren 1960 en 1970 grote bekendheid bij het brede publiek. Die tv-programma’s worden, net als zijn sculpturen, schilderijen en installaties, door het Stedelijk Museum aangekocht; ze maken nu deel uit van de collectie en worden regelmatig getoond.

Eind maart van dit jaar kwam Wim T Schippers nog langs in het Stedelijk om het zaaltje dat we speciaal met zijn werk hadden ingericht te bekijken. Met ‘Mnemosyne’ en ‘The Lump’, beide uit 1966, én met de allereerste fameuze aflevering van het televisie programma Van Oekels Discohoek. Daarin zingt Donna Summer haar hit The Hostage, waarbij ze steeds hinderlijk onderbroken wordt door Ir. Evert van der P*k, die in haar plaats de telefoon opneemt, en het hele optreden in de war stuurt. Wim T. Schippers kon er nog steeds om grinniken. Met zijn overlijden verliezen we een van de meest markante figuren van de hedendaagse kunst.

Our stunning visitors are taking the spotlight on the iconic Stedelijk staircase! Many people have stepped foot on these steps since the opening of the museum in 1895. Since then, performers have stood on these steps for hours, artists created the most extravagant works for the stairwell, and to this day visitors climb them in conversation, deep in thought, or for a great pic 😉

Onze prachtige bezoekers staan in de schijnwerpers op de iconische trap van het Stedelijk! Sinds de opening van het museum in 1895 hebben talloze mensen deze trap betreden. Sindsdien hebben performers urenlang op deze treden gestaan, hebben kunstenaars de meest extravagante werken voor het trap gemaakt, en tot op de dag van vandaag belopen bezoekers de trap al pratend, in gedachten verzonken, of gewoon voor een geweldige foto 😉

Can you spot the little sprout in this painting? It might seem small in scale, but it was a big theme for artist Heinrich Campendonk: almost every work he created explored the interconnectedness between humans, plants, animals, and the natural world. 🌱

His imagary usually feels dreamy, teetering on the edge of fairy tale-like. Throughout his career he'd also be working with stained glass, often times utilizing more abstract shapes such as triangles or circles, which you might notice in the background of this painting as well.

Spot jij het plantje in dit schilderij? Het lijkt misschien klein van formaat, maar dit was een groot thema voor kunstenaar Heinrich Campendonk: in bijna al zijn werken onderzocht hij de onderlinge verbondenheid tussen mensen, planten, dieren en de natuur. 🌱

Zijn beeldtaal heeft meestal een dromerig karakter en balanceert op de grens van het sprookjesachtige. Gedurende zijn hele carrière werkte hij ook met glas-in-lood, waarbij hij vaak gebruik maakte van meer abstracte vormen zoals driehoeken of cirkels, die je ook op de achtergrond van dit schilderij kunt zien.

This might look like a rack filled with nothing more than cheerful paintings... but look closer! Something else is going on here 👀

These works are made by Melle. In the past, there have been many attempts to interpret Melle’s paintings. This is no easy task, not only because he never affiliated himself with any artistic movement or group of artists, but also because he rarely spoke about his motifs and sources of inspiration.

In the 1960s, a major social liberation took place in the realm of sexuality, and the public felt that Melle’s art resonated well with this movement. However, because so much attention was focused on that specific aspect, Melle's craftsmanship was often overlooked.

These works are , but we currently have an artwork by Melle on view in the exhibition 'Beyond the Manosphere — Masculinities Today'. Have you found it yet?

Dit lijkt misschien een rek vol met niets meer dan vrolijke schilderijen... maar kijk eens goed! Er is hier iets anders aan de hand 👀

Deze werken zijn gemaakt door Melle. In het verleden zijn er veel pogingen gedaan om Melle's schilderijen te interpreteren. Dit is geen gemakkelijke taak, niet alleen omdat hij zich nooit aansloot bij een artistieke stroming of groep kunstenaars, maar ook omdat hij zelden sprak over zijn motieven en inspiratiebronnen.

In de jaren zestig vond er op het gebied van seksualiteit een grote sociale bevrijding plaats, en het publiek vond dat Melle’s kunst goed aansloot bij deze beweging. Omdat de aandacht echter zo sterk op dat specifieke aspect was gericht, werd Melle’s vakmanschap vaak over het hoofd gezien.

Deze werken zijn , maar we hebben momenteel een kunstwerk van Melle in de tentoonstelling 'Beyond the Manosphere — Masculinities Today'. Heb je het al gevonden?
