Names in Our Veins

Two generations. Two positions within the Chinese Indonesian diaspora. One shared inquiry into the shifting lines of identity across borders, collective trauma, and inheritance.

Names in Our Veins brings together FX Harsono (b . 1949, Blitar) and Vincent Ruijters (1986, The Hague) - an artist speaking from first hand experience in Indonesia and the other from a double diaspora in the Netherlands.

FX Harsono spent decades confronting authoritarian state politics before turning inward after the 1998 violence targeting Chinese Indonesians. Meanwhile Vincent Ruijters follows an ancestral pull leading him to his grandmother's forgotten grave in Sumatra.

This journey forms the basis of Ruijters' major new commission, Kuburan (Graves). Presented alongside landmark works by Harsono on his erased Chinese name and mass graves of massacred Chinese Indonesians from the 1950s, the exhibition bridges lived experience and generational memory.

1 minute with Charles Esche

Charles Esche has spent decades thinking about what museums can be. Here, he turns his attention to Every Worm Trampled Is a Star and tells us what he appreciates about this work by Aram Lee.

We had such a nice time chatting with him and he was dropping gems the whole time that we just had to hit record! Luckily was there to help. ๐ŸŽฅ

Final week to visit ๐Ÿ’ซ
esche is a curator and writer. He was director of Van Abbemuseum, co-founder of L'Internationale, and founding director of Afterall Journal.

27/07/2026

Here's what some of our visitors had to say about Every Worm Trampled Is a Star.

From one-word impressions to personal reflectionsโ€”including from Aram Lee's former teacher and one of her former students.

On view at Buro Stedelijk until 9 August.

Sometimes the best way into an exhibition is simply to hear the artist speak about it.

Join Aram Lee for a short tour of "Every Worm Trampled Is a Star", where she tells us where the title came from, why the work led her from Seoul to Nevada, Japan and Netherlands, and how she understands decolonial cosmic transformation.

On view at Buro Stedelijk until 9 August-still a time left if you haven't made it by yet.

A little rewind โช

Back in June, ๐—•๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ผ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜†๐˜€: ๐—จ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜…๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ brought four events with four very different vibesโ€”from camp to defiant to wholesome and contemplativeโ€”filling our Central Space with hands-on tech tinkering, Turkish horror films, custom-blend potions, and a fashion show where people of all ages became both makers and models.

On 11 June:
โœฆ Words & Wires: cyberwriter workshop
โœฆ Everything Is Going To Be Okay

On 13 June
โœฆ Horror: Made in Turkey
โœฆ We Wear The World

Thanks to everyone who joined us and made these moments special. ๐Ÿ’™

We'll be sharing photo carousels from each event soonโ€”keep an eye out, and don't forget to tag yourself (and your friends) when they're up!

Ever wondered what the earth sounds like from the inside? ๐ŸŒ whispering secrets...

Sundays are for slowing down the pace and getting curious. In Aram Leeโ€™s "Every Worm Trampled is a Star", we have 6 suspended glass panels, each humming with a completely different recordingโ€”from subterranean geophone sounds from deep inside the ground to layered oral histories in Korean and English from Seoulโ€™s Yongsan site to Nevada US nuclear test site.

The best part? You canโ€™t just stand back and look. Grab a stool, lean toward the glass (bring a friend to huddle in with you!), and feel the literal vibrations as you get close.

Itโ€™s the perfect, cozy Sunday drop-in. Come find your favorite panelโ€”weโ€™re open until 18:00! ๐ŸŒ€โœจ

The ultimate Sunday huddle. ๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ

What if memory wasn't held only in archives or monuments, but in soil, sound, exiles, microorganisms, mountains, and vibrations?

What if the land itself could remember?

Come spend some time with the many voices that move through ๐“”๐“ฟ๐“ฎ๐“ป๐”‚ ๐“ฆ๐“ธ๐“ป๐“ถ ๐“ฃ๐“ป๐“ช๐“ถ๐“น๐“ต๐“ฎ๐“ญ ๐“˜๐“ผ ๐“ช ๐“ข๐“ฝ๐“ช๐“ปโ€”voices far and near connected to the Yongsan site in Seoul, separated from it, returning to it, and imagining what it might yet become.

Watch the film. Sit for a while. Lean in close to the vibrating glass. Take your time. Let them resonate.

On view at Buro Stedelijk until 9 August.
Open daily, 10amโ€“6pm.
