He was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He served as Governor General of Canada, the tenth since Canadian Confederation and the only British prince to do so to date.

Expedition member and dogs by a towering iceberg and ice formation named Castle Berg. They are part of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott led a polar party southwards in November 1911 in an attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. He and four others died in 1912 on the return journey.
