Lord Indra separates Dyaus (the primordial Sky Father) and Prithvi (the Earth Mother) to create space for life to flourish, and he slays the cosmic serpent Vritra to release the trapped waters of fertility.

These two foundational myths from the Rigveda are deeply connected, representing Indra's role as the ultimate preserver of order (Rta) and bringer of life.

In early Vedic texts, Dyaus and Prithvi represent the primordial parents of all things. Before they were separated, the Sky and Earth were joined together, keeping the universe in a state of eternal darkness and stagnation.

According to the myths, when the infant Indra consumed the ritual drink Soma to prepare for his battle against Vritra, he expanded to a gigantic size. His massive presence and strength frightened his parents. As he grew, he physically pushed and wedged the Sky and Earth apart, creating the vast atmospheric expanse (Akasha) needed for the world to exist.

Vritra (often described as a dragon or giant serpent) is the ultimate symbol of chaos, drought, and obstruction. He held all the waters of the world captive in his mountain fortresses, causing widespread drought and threatening human existence. Armed with the mighty thunderbolt (Vajra), which was forged by the craftsman god Tvastar, Indra engaged in a fierce battle with Vritra. Indra successfully defeated the serpent, shattered his fortresses, and released the imprisoned waters. This act of bravery earned him the epithet Vrtrahan (the slayer of Vritra). The release of the waters brought rain and prosperity to mankind, cementing Indra's status as the King of the Gods.
