Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America: World Police (2004) is a foul-mouthed satire of American militarism, Hollywood heroism and the post-9/11 urge to police the world. With marionettes, explosions and a relentless stream of politically incorrect humour, global politics is reduced to something both incredibly stupid and strangely revealing. 🇺🇸

For a special screening on September 11th, cultural theorist will introduce the film with a presentation placing Team America back into the political and cultural moment that produced it. What exactly was this film satirising in 2004? And what can its particular brand of provocation tell us about Hollywood, American power and the propaganda of the War on Terror?

We’re simply devastated by the passing of British actor Tim Curry at the age of 80. Curry leaves behind a career defined by extraordinary versatility, from Pennywise in It to the flamboyant villains of Clue and Legend. But above all, he will forever be Dr. Frank-N-Furter, whose fearless, seductive and gloriously outrageous performance in The Rocky Horror Picture Show helped turn the film into a cultural phenomenon and gave generations of audiences permission to embrace their individuality. We were already working on special screenings of Rocky in September and October, but what other Curry favorites would you like to see us screen again? 👄

Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr, a towering figure in contemplative cinema whose long takes and bleak black-and-white epics reshaped the art form, has died at the age of 70. 🕊️

Tarr emerged from grassroots beginnings in Hungary in the late 1970s to international prominence with films like Damnation, his breakthrough in 1988, and Sátántangó, a hypnotic seven-hour exploration of dissolution and despair that has been enshrined as one of the great achievements of world cinema.

His unique cinematic language of extended single shots, minimal editing and meditative pacing distilled a somber, reflective vision of human existence that influenced generations of filmmakers and helped define the slow cinema movement.

Working closely with novelist László Krasznahorkai, Tarr made films such as Werckmeister Harmóniák (now screening as part of LAB Suggestions and The Turin Horse, his prize-winning final feature.
He leaves behind a body of work that forever stretched cinema’s sense of time, patience, and moral gravity. 🇭🇺
