In the studio with Bau Air The Grey Space resident .mahin

“During the residency I am working on my new performance GASP, which I am developing together with instrument inventors initiative as part of the Nieuwe Makers Traject of the Fonds Podiumkunsten. GASP is a physical and vocal performance that starts from a simple premise: an inhalation. We see five figures inhaling in order to speak. Normally, an exhalation follows: a word, a sentence, a scream, an action. In GASP, however, the people evolve into figures in which every form of exhalation — including the voice — is withheld. They remain suspended in an unfinished impulse. Everything comes in, but nothing can come out. The entire performance becomes a build-up without release. What begins as an inability slowly shifts into another way of being. This turns the people into hybrid beings who continue to search relentlessly for movement within this new reality.”

Starting her residency at Bau Oost today is Diane Mahin, welcome .mahin !

Diane Mahín (b. 1993) is a Dutch-Iranian performance maker and sociologist. She makes performances in which sound and physicality are the driving forces. Diane scrutinizes the human body as a material object in order to dissect social constructions. Her works focus on bodysounds (guts, growls, cries, breaths) which she uses to create performative codes shaped by the learned behaviors of an unbearable society. She creates space for the ugliness and darkness of daily life without softening it, sometimes provoking laughter you did not see coming.

She studied at Goldsmiths, University of London and Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts, and Sandberg Institute, and her works have been shown in visual arts, theater, and new music contexts.

With the 3Package Deal , AFK provides talented artists from around the world with a professional network, a grant and an affordable living and/or working space. Groups of three renowned art institutions from Amsterdam form coalitions that each mentor one outstanding talent for a period of one year. For the 2026 cohort, Bau joins forces with De Balie and De Ateliers . Together with these outstanding partners, we will be supporting South African artist Tumelo Mtimkhulu .mtkl in the coming year. At the end of the year, all the artists will share their progress at the free-for-all International Art Talent Festival.

Tumelo Mtimkhulu is an artist from Johannesburg, South Africa. He works between Johannesburg and Amsterdam. He employs visual and written text to grapple with questions of how to negotiate the personal and histories that one is heir to. Treating the often prescribed and singular idea of what history is as suspect. He conceives of these histories as ‘texts’ in themselves and the ‘human’ being as a site onto which these histories/experiences/texts are written, effaced, rewritten and superimposed onto existing ‘texts’. These ‘texts’ are both specific to oneself and shared (albeit from different positions); such as the experience of upbringing, loss, love, language, socio-political happenings and geography.

Open call for our season 2026-2027 residency spots! Apply now!

Residencies for experienced, independent dance and performance makers

Apply using the application form here: https://bau.amsterdam/pages/open-call-bau-air-base-2026/

Deadline 30 March 2026

What is Bau AIR Base?
Bau AIR Base is a six-week residency for experienced, independent makers in the (performing) arts who are in need for a studio space to explore the themes of a new project and/or to immerse themselves in new ways of working, presenting or collaborating.

Who is it for?
We invite anyone to submit a research plan who:

> has established a working practice with a clear artistic signature,
> has independently developed at least five projects
> has received professional recognition (as evidenced by presentations at recognised venues, festivals, presentation institutions and/or media attention)
> works at the intersection of dance, performance, mime or other artistic work involving movement and the body
> has followed an art education or is self-taught with a proven professional practice

We are interested in makers who go off the beaten track and are willing to contribute to the meeting place that is Bau. We encourage conversation between makers and an audience interested in the development of new work. Therefore, we ask specifically about audience engaging activities you plan to undertake during your residency. An informal presentation is a regular part of the residency.

Bau encourages choreographers and artists from diverse cultural and artistic backgrounds to apply, including those working in crossovers with, for example, mime, visual arts, music, theatre and/or circus. The artistic style (of dance) is less important in the selection process than the content plan and the meaningful role the residency can play in it.
