The Motorcity is Burning
Oil on canvas 110 x 140 cm

Come, just like Anne Mei, have a closer 👀. The work is on view until the end of January 💚

“Blues, soul and reggae are entertainment. As a Black person, I was inspired by music and musicians such as Lauryn Hill and John Lee Ho**er, who reflect my reality and experience. My father used to play a lot of soul music at home which has remained important to me. The ‘Motor City’ (Detroit) was set ablaze following a police raid on 23 July 1967. Ho**er lived in the middle of this unrest and described his experiences in the song ‘The Motor City is Burning”

Graffiti, marker, diamonds (fake) en canvas

“This is a collective work, created in collaboration with Giovanni an artist who is neurodiverse. We decided
to make a diamond painting after working for weeks with more than 20 people sticking stones on a self- portrait from Basquiat. After that, it went to the second stage where we exhibited the work in the Hermitage. The result was work that was handwritten by thousands of museum visitors. We invited the people to go crazy with primary colours - with no limits - just a marker and a space to write or draw whatever you wanted without any restrictions”

Frida Kahlo by Quentley Barbara

"I chose Frida Kahlo because she has greatly influenced my work. Her work is a form of political activism, especially feminism. But I was also inspired by the autobiographical elements in her work - how she combines realism with fantasy. I am also inspired by her need to communicate through art, telling her stories transforming negative experiences into positive by turning them into art!"

LAST CHANCE TO VISIT
The year is coming to an end and so are some exhibitions in the Amsterdam art scene. Take your chance and explore them while you can!

1) New Photography and the Ephemeral, Leo Vroegindeweij, Zhu Hong, Sylvie Bonnot, André de Jong
The Merchant House | Until 18 December

Vroegindeweij’s installation offers a breathtaking experience. Visitors see themselves reflected in the high-gloss spheres. The idea is that art reflects life and life reflects art. Photographic works, sculptures, paintings and installations by Zhu Hong, Sylvie Bonnot and André de Jong are also presented.

2) Totaliter Aliter,
Go Mulan Gallery | Until 25 December

Ulrike Rehm shows her world full of ancient myths in the exhibition “Totaliter Aliter". Such as an image of the Lamb or by referring in her use of materials to ancient techniques such as encaustic, a technique that dates back to 1000 BCE. Rehm works with various materials such as textiles, paper, ceramics, porcelain, soap and beeswax.

3) Provisional Temple Of Semi-Failed Resistance Artist Fighter Dreamers, Jeremiah Day
Ellen de Bruijne PROJECTS | Until 24 December

Day speculates on what kind of space would emerge from honoring the artists of the Dutch Resistance of the Second World War, in particular Willem Arondeus. Arondeus himself was inspired by an example from the past, from his research into artists who fought in the Paris Commune, and his belief that at some moments artists, even the dreamiest ones, have a unique capacity to step into politics.

4) Superfan, Artists by Artists
Madé van Krimpen| Until 25 December in the Green Room, Prinsengracht 645.

The exhibition brings together different worlds, with participants paying tribute to the visual and musical artists that have inspired them. Works by artists from diverse backgrounds are shown, each using their own mediums and styles. Some are inspired by their favorite music and artworks, some by childhood memories, and others by political views.

1. Where: Madé van Krimpen
When: 10 & 17 December
What: December Fun! Three weeks of art encounters APE x Madé

10 December: Launch of Der Berliner Nacktkalender 2023 by Lara Verheijden
The Naked Calendar created by photographer Lara Verheijden is something different from classic n**e calendars: she depicts people in everyday situations, naked or semi-n**e, together or alone, in different spots in the middle of the city.

17 December: Launching MONOGRAM #2 by Liv Liberg
Liv Liberg's work explores the idea of being a woman, through clothing and character play. This time the gallery is showing her work “The Girl”, a project for her childhood friend.

2. Where: Badhuis Oedipus, Javaplein 21
When: 10 & 11 December
What: One night exhibition - Bring Your Own Beamer

BYOB is a one night exhibition organised by Upstream Gallery to celebrate the media art community by using projection. It will be a dynamic and energetic exhibition of moving images, combined with music, beer and party vibes.

3. Where:
When: Up to 18 December
What: Tournament of The Unknown

Coinciding with the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Tournament of the Unknown will challenge binary thinking and established social norms through q***r sporting events, workshops and performances. During the closing, the audience can actively participate in the tournament. In addition therw will be an exhibition and public programme.

4. Where:
When: 10 December
What: Iso & Friends Winter Market

iso amsterdam invites you to a community gathering with all their residents. The day presents itself as a holiday market: a chance to shop for some of our resident’s affordable art pieces, innovative design and craft items.
LAST CHANCE TO VISIT

The first exhibitions of the gallery season are coming to an end. Catch them while you can, you still have two days to visit these shows!

1. The Beginning of A New Beginning – Monali Meher
Lumen Travo Gallery I Until 29 October (updated)

The Beginning of A New Beginning finds its starting point in the intense and unprecedented sequence of lockdowns the world has recently experienced. Through a new series of mix media drawings and assemblages, Meher reflects on the pandemic period just gone by, pointing out the relentless cycle of ‘multiple beginnings’ we, as humans, are enduring in the hope to find a renewed and positive perspective for the world.

2. Still (a) Life – Helena van der Kraan
Madé van Krimpen I Until 8 October

Helena van der Kraan’s still life photographs gently draw attention to intimate everyday objects and scenes. Her images guide their viewers to reflect on the ordinary things in life. Van Kraan's work boasts effortlessness, never trying to steer the viewer into a signal or particular interpretation.

3. ZOOM – Ricardo van Eyk, Frank Nitsche, Benjamin Roth, Han Schuil
Galerie Onrust I Until 8 October

Ricardo van Eyk has based his space-filling installation CIVIL II on a greenhouse. The greenhouse, with its repeating lines and surfaces, can be interpreted as a painterly intervention. It is an installation in which Van Eyck generates direction, space, vistas and layers. A work that balances on the line between painting and architecture, sharpening the focus on the works of Nitsche, Roth and Schuil and connecting them to one another.

Still (a) Life
https://focusmagazine.nl/2022/08/26/helena-van-der-kraan-still-a-life/

Klaas Rommelaere (1986, Roeselare, Belgium) graduated in 2013 in fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. After a while, he realized that the world of fashion was not where his ideas would come to life. Rommelaere began carving his creative path with needlework being the language of his imagination.

His work demonstrates how pop culture can be a comforting force in our lives. Rommelaere makes intricately embroidered tapestries and tactile sculptures bridging the personal and the collective. The work tells tales of his lived experience and pays homage to the cult movies which have shaped his imagination. Rommelaere works closely with a “tight-knit” group of 15 veteran craftswomen (‘The Madams’) to produce his pieces.

Interested in the work of Rommelaer? He is represented by Madé van Krimpen. Visit the exhibition ‘Dark Uncles’, on show until 30 July. Read more about this exhibition: shorturl.at/vGZ37.
‘Shreds of Eve’ is a series of poetic full body portraits that emphasize the fragmentation of herstories in history and is now on show at Multiplemadé

Each Eve exists of three separate parts:
head👤, heart❤️ and heels👠

All portraits are carefully and lovingly composed by Jitske Schols. From various fragments of photographs by herself, found footage, drawings and digital paintings, piece by piece new portraits of women were created. They represent the number of untold or disjointed stories of women throughout history.

'Shreds of Eve is a life-sized series of poetic portraits'

Anyone who studies history learns the coherent stories of fathers, sons and husbands. We can only form an image of women by stringing together some shreds and threads of stories carelessly scattered around. ‘Shreds of Eve’ is a series of poetic portraits that emphasize the fragmentation of herstories in history. All portraits are carefully and lovingly composed by myself. With various fragments of my own photographs, found footage, drawings and digital paintings, new portraits of women were created piece by piece. The portraits represent the number of untold or disjointed stories of women throughout history. With ‘Shreds of Eve’ new primeval women (‘Eves of shreds’) arise to tell future stories from an equal female perspective and to encourage the viewer to rethink history.
