Our educational system is faulty.
Too much of theory, barely any practical's.
No real life scenario type cases; unnecessary curriculums, redundant 4-6 years spent studying something that could be concluded in 2-3 years, outdated textbooks and study materials, but a Prof is still quoting a 1996 source in 2022 that has since been long repealed and a Master Degree student is spending millions pursuing outdated knowledge that has been long updated.
Finance is taught by people who have no practical knowledge about Banking, Investments, Stock Trading, etc.
The HOD of Marketing has never done Sales and Marketing in their lives. The Economics Lecturer only has the head knowledge of economics as defined by Lionel Robbins and 12 others.
Entrepreneurship is preached on the podium by 'big men' and 'big women' who are not entrepreneurs themselves and the idea of skill acquisition ends with baking, doing caustic soda and making custard.
You live in that safe haven of a University, deluded to the actual brutal reality of life, only to step out ill prepared and left to compulsorily and involuntarily undergo another orientation which you never had as a Fresher in College.
They lied to you. They didn't tell you the full truth. Even your parents bought this lie and sold it to you too because it was what worked in their era. You too lied to you. They told you that all you just had to do was be a straight 'A' student and fill up your head with crammed portions of textbooks and photocopied manuals.
But nah, they didn't tell you nothing about being life smart and they didn't tell you that life is lived inside life not in the pages of a book. They didn't tell you about being practical minded and that oftentimes, you might have to drop what you think you love and love doing what you hate, until you love what you hate enough to get you life-changing results.
I was listening to a Reverend Father the other day, and he said formal education has made people more ignorant than ignorance has made people seek education. That was deep! I felt it. He emphasized on how people become more arrogant and cocky and despise entrepreneurship, business, marketing and opportunities that could transform their lives 10x faster than all their degrees, just because they went to school and got a certification.
"I majored in bla bla bla.. so if it's not bla bla bla, I'm not doing"
"Why would you ask me to do XYZ, can't you see that I have a Masters Degree? What insolence!"
"I am studying a 'professional' course, so I do not need to a acquire a skill."
No be to dey wear 3 piece suit, you dey see 3 square meal chop on a steady? Sapa dey flog you abi e no dey flog you? You get savings? What does it look like? When last you count 7 figures wey be your own?
Reminds me of a tweet by Casper Nyovest. (I'd attach it to this post). He spelt 'Rolls Royce' wrongly, someone corrected him, he said "you spell it, I buy it. Deal?" Guy man no fit answer again. That was arrogant from him though, but see the deep lesson – It's not just by being book smart and knowing how to write big grammar, spell flawlessly and speak Queen's English. How many Professors of English fit afford Benz GLK 350, 2014 model? Rolls-Royce is too far.
Education is enlightenment. Enlightenment is illumination. Eye-opening from darkness to light. Who wouldn't love that? It's awesome. It's great! But we've tied this 'education' to just the formal setting.
If your education ends only in the classroom, are you really educated? That's your question not mine.
