Moses Umoh :
Soft musical interludes of some popular Nigerian and Western Music collections set the tone for the day, as the stage had been well decorated with materials to depicts the traditional African Set, welcoming everyone to the event.
The Artistes all set back stage, guest well seated and every technical gears like lighting and audio equipment being tested, the spotlight quickly traveled to the far corner where the first act to mount the stage, was making his way for the story telling phase of the event of which he discussed the personality of the queen.
The event kicked of with a drama set where Queen Amina Zazzau played by Princess Paulinus and her mother Queen Barkwa played by Idongesit Lawrence Udoh and everyone in the village were happy, singing songs of joy and as well, showing some northern traditional dance steps, fused with some contemporary styles too.
Another scene portrayed a happy setting though, marred by a cry heard from a woman that wasn't in town, lamenting of a certain external enemy that was about attacking the village. This fuel the desire of young Amina, daring to take the responsibility of a warrior to defend her people.
She launched her mission even at the expense of the warnings from her mother and everyone else. Her decision of not getting married too was one factor that made everyone frowned to her yearning for power even when there were admirers from far and near.
Though she (Queen Amina) successful passed the induction rituals and finally crowned a queen, she also succeeded in destroying the intruders in her first battle and this cause a volcanic eruption of joy in the village has everyone sang and rejoice.
A scene which the queen was to select her men came to play, as well as a mini battle to test the abilities of the warriors. This scene was characterized with lots of dance activities especially during the war. Some comic relief during the act gave the audience a sense of participation as the cheered at their favorite dancer and moves.
The hunger for a male companion became the fate of Queen Amina as she took some the War victims as her company at night tho for sexual pleasure, they didn't make it till the next evening because of the substance they drank from the wine offered by the queen at her court. This scenario gradually creeped into her own kingdom as she started birthing the thought of going intimate with her warriors, most of the victims were saved because of the kind gesture of one of her mates who will inform her next victim ahead of time. On realizing the mole, the queen got her eliminated by the poison. This very act, saw the end of her reign as she got killed after ruling her people for over 34 years.
The played ended with all the dancers and the head of the production team Edima-Abasi Imara who directed and choreographed the play as well as the entire Citizens of Dance Ville, taking a bow that earned them a thunderous ovation from the audience who were well entertained by their performances.
It was a great event indeed and though it was a workshop performance, the full staging of The show will come up in June with more details information and varieties. We urge you to anticipate a clear your calendar to attend.
