BRIEF HISTORY OF NSIT UBIUM LOCAL GOVERNMENT
AREA
Nsit Ubium Local Government Area is one of the Local
Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State situated in the South
Eastern part of Nigeria. This Local Government Area was
created out of the then Etinan Local Government Area on
September 1991 under the regime of Idongesit Nkanga as
the governor of Akwa Ibom State with its headquarters at
Ikot Edibon and was chaired by Bar. Essien Esema the
pioneer Executive Chairman. Nsit Ubium is made up of two
clans, Nsit and Ubium with 65 villages. It is located at
about 6km East of Eket, Okobo, Nsit Ibom, Etinan, Ibesikpo/
Asutan and Nsit Atai Local Government Areas. Nsit Ubium
Local Government Area shares common boundary with Nsit
Ibom and Eket Local Government Areas it is well drained by
the Qua Ibo River which has tributaries scattered in many
locations in the area. This great Local Government covers a
land mass of 242.942sq kin. According to 2006 National
Census Nsit Ubium has a population of 128,231 with lovely
people cut across the two clans Nsit and Ubium, with 32
villages in Nsit clan and 33 in Ubium clan. They identify
themselves along ethnic linage. Ubium has three groups,
Ise, Afaha and Ukat while Nsit is divided into Ibiakpan,
Obotim, Nduo Eduo and Afia Nsit groups. Nsit Ubium Local
Government Area has 10 wards and divided into 5 districts,
Ndiya district with 9 villages, Ubium North district with 16
villages, Itreto district with 9 villages, Ibia Akpan Obotim
district with 14 villages and Ubium South district with 22
villages.
The topography of the Local Government is undulating with
shallow depressions, dry valleys and few rivers, which lie
far apart between the predominant plains. Marshes and
swamps influenced by the Qua Iboe River traverse a large
portion of the Local Government Area. Nsit Ubium people
are generally very hospitable, knowledgeable and
