Today, at the esteemed office of the Director, Akwa Ibom State Council for Arts and Culture, the Chairman of Performing Musicians Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Uyo Zone, Comrade Ofonime Akpan, proudly presented an Award of Excellence to Ben Priest in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth and promotion of music and the creative arts.

MISTAKES TO AVOID AS A BACKUP SINGER..

As a backup singer, you must know your role and understand how important you are to the lead singer and instrumentalists..

If your result as a backup singer is poor or bad, it destroys the ministration.

As a backup singer, know your limits and your range. Understand what you should do and play your role very well. Stick to plans and patterns as rehearsed.

SCORE THE SONG
As a backup singer, it is expected of you to have scored the song and the lyrics,knowing the song word by word. Lyric by lyric. Part by part.
Voice by voice.

KNOW YOUR PART
Never make the mistakes of backing up a song you don't know your part,trying to do guess work where you're not sure of your part .
we don't want you to sing rumours you will mess up the ministration.
Stop singing rumours ,know what you are doing understand your part .

DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES WHILE BACKING UP
Stay vigilant and focus, strong, and don't lose the lead singer.
This is good for proper communication and information

STAY ON THE SAME FREQUENCY WITH THE LEAD VOCAL
If your lead singer is singing soft and slow, stay on the same frequency and don't go fast and harsh.
If the lead is singing energetically, fast, or hard, you must learn to match that same tone and frequency as well.
If the lead singer's Adlibs are on higher pitch, shift to higher harmonies; match the energy.

DON'T DO RIFFS AND RUNS WHILE BACKING UP
Are you the lead singer?Wait for your turn to lead.
Stop that show off attitude. Most backups get carried away and begin to play the role of the lead singer.
Just be more focused on creating a good and balanced melody and harmonies while staying as a defence team for the lead singer.

DON'T DO VOCAL DYNAMICS AND AD LIBS
Don't play the role of the lead singer no matter how good you feel or think you can do it DON'T try that thing.
You're not the one leading. Wait for your turn. Be patient, my friend.
As long as you're backing up, be humble. you must maintain your lane and give support to the lead singer.

DON'T KEEP QUIET IF YOU FORGET YOUR PART
Once you forget your part on the way while singing harmonies , just quickly 𝙨𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙙𝙮. Don't keep quiet. Switch to melody and keep singing that till you get your correct harmony part in your head.

DON'T MAKE YOUR LEAD SINGER'S ERRORS
While singing and your lead singer slightly goes off key, please don't follow him/her. Kindly stay on key to help him/her find his or her way back on track.
You can only switch into the same key if and only the instrumentalists followed him/her to another key.
Same case with off beats, off chords, and off notes.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRACTICE AND REHEARSALS 💯🎹🎧

Practice is when you are giving a particular piece of song or music materials to Score,and you decided to put in your best at home to score the song or material.
By understanding and scoring your parts well ,knowing where to transition or break .
Perfecting the song they gave you to score,that’s you practicing.

Rehearsals is when you have learnt your song ,you understand your parts already,you have mastered everything in the song ,then you come together with other singers or musicians to do what you guys have perfected during your practice separately.
Testing what works ,and removing what will not work.
You come together with other musicians to perfect what you guys have learnt separately in harmony,coming together and playing in harmony is rehearsals.

You don’t start scoring or practicing your songs during rehearsals,if you keep learning songs during rehearsals then it’s not rehearsals.
You are just practicing.

Rehearsals is when you’ve mastered your parts and you know what to do already,so you just come together with other musicians to do it in harmony.
Testing what works ,and what will not .

You don’t learn your songs during rehearsals, you learn your songs during practice.
