Hmmmm!

A study in Scientific Reports, led by Cynthia Schuck‑Paim of the Welfare Footprint Institute, reveals that rainbow trout can experience up to 22 minutes (typically around 10 minutes) of intense pain during air asphyxia - when taken out of water or immersed in ice slurry. This is likely similar for other fish too, and should be rather obvious.

Within just five seconds, fish show neurochemical signs of distress. Their gills collapse, carbon dioxide builds up, and behaviors like frantic twisting indicate clear suffering.

Current common practices—like chilling in ice slurry—actually delay loss of consciousness, prolonging agony.

The study advocates for electrical stunning, which could prevent 60 to 1,200 minutes of pain for every US dollar spent on capital equipment, and percussive stunning - though the latter faces practical consistency challenges.

Ultimately, fish are sentient beings capable of real suffering, and there’s a compelling case to reform current harvesting methods. Throughout history, we have always found more humane ways to do the things we do to sentient beings as we learn more about what they experience. While having a good connection to ourselves and our own bodies would reveal the pain other creatures experience, we are a largely disconnected society, and thus, science has been the catalyst for change.

He’s the only survivor of the plane crash in India.
