Okocha Speaks Out on Chelle's Appointment and Nigeria's Football Challenges
The appointment of Eric Chelle as head coach of the Super Eagles has sparked a lot of debate, and legendary footballer Austin Jay Jay Okocha is at the forefront of this controversy.
Okocha, a celebrated figure in African football, has openly criticized the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their decision to bring Chelle on board.
He, along with fellow ex-player Kanu Nwankwo, has expressed concerns about the Super Eagles' inability to secure any trophies in recent years, attributing this failure to political interference and a lack of consistency in coaching.
Okocha argues that the management of Nigeria's football by politicians is detrimental to the sport's success.
"You can’t appoint politicians to manage football. They will turn it to politics and that’s what is happening today.
We have the best players in the world, yet we have no trophy to lay our hands, not because of the players, absolutely not," he stated.
He elaborated on the impact of changing coaches, saying, "When you change a coach, you have changed a dream, a vision, and a mission; in short, you have changed a generation."
Okocha emphasized that changing a coach is not as simple as it seems; it can be harmful to the players, causing them to lose focus, unless they themselves demand a better coach.
He suggested that before considering a coaching change, the NFF should consult key players and seek their opinions, as their performance often hinges on the relationship they have with their coach.
