Findings revealed that the state had experienced flooding in 1960, 1961, 1963, 1969, 1978, 1980, 2011, 2013, 2016 and other year, of all flood disasters in the city, that of 1980 and August 2011 still remain fresh in the consciousness of the residents and even outsiders as a result of the heavy human and material losses that were left behind.The Ogunpa River river system is a third-order stream with a channel length of 21.5 kilometres (13.4 mi) and a drainage basin covering 73.3 square kilometres (28.3 sq mi) draining the densely populated eastern part of Ibadan, Nigeria. The city of Ibadan in southwestern Nigeria (7º23’ N, 3º5’ E) is the largest urban centre in Africa south of the Sahara. Ogunpa River is known to contain 49 species of zooplankton.Household waste is known to be dumped along the path of the Ogunpa. This amongst other causes had contributed greatly to the reoccurring flooding, as water ways are blocked by these dumpes, canals and water hide out are equally rendered useless, drainage leading to and out of the river are usually filed with refuse, thus causing water to make way for itself, leaving a gurry scene behind. Those affected knows better.
Channelisation project
In 1999, the Nigerian Government took over the "Channelisation Project" of the Ogunpa River. They had been bedeviled by series of problems since 1977. It was first started by the state government of Oyo State. To this end, a 10 billion naira contract was awarded to finish the channelisation of the Ogunpa.
Despite the effort of past and present administration to prevent the re-occurrence of flooding from this river, the attitude towards this effort is rather unfortunate as negative effort are been made daily to ensure that all root causes of the flodding are in place again. To whose disadvantage we want to ask? The environmetal management of the State and it's environs is not just the function of the government only, citizens must also take responsibility where necessary. It is no
