Complete pencil drawing of my latest piece titled “ EKUN”

The Ooni is frequently addressed as “Ekun,” a title that recognizes him as a fierce and powerful protector. The leopard is chosen to be part of the monarch for several specific reasons which are:

Stealth and Wisdom

The Unchanging Nature

Mastery of Realms

It’s worth noting that while the Oba of Benin (whose dynasty traces its roots back to Ife via Prince Oranmiyan) is also famously associated with the leopard, the Ooni of Ife uses the leopard primarily as a spiritual and ancestral totem. In Benin, leopards were historically kept in the palace as pets to show the King’s dominance over the “King of the Forest,” whereas in Ife, the leopard remains a more mystical, “invisible” source of power and that’s what motivated to create this peice
