Pastor Favour Maxy Okoise, General Overseer of Refiners Fire Global Assembly in Calabar, Cross River State, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for r@ping a 16-year-old girl under his spiritual guidance.

The Family Court of the Cross River State Customary Court of Appeal, presided over by Justice Blessing Egwu Obin, delivered the verdict following a case pursued by Gender and Development Action (GADA). The court found that Okoise s€xu@lly assaulted the minor, referred to as O.P.I., in Calabar South between November and December 2016.

The victim, who had moved to Calabar in August 2016 for university entrance exams, lived with her sister where Okoise frequently visited for spiritual teachings. She testified that he repeatedly harassed her, ultimately manipulating her into non-consensual s€x by falsely claiming that "God needed her body" and that he could transfer spiritual virtues through in*******se.

Justice Obin ruled that Okoise had unlawful carnal knowledge of a minor, violating the Cross River State Child Protection Law of 2003. In addition to life imprisonment, he was ordered to pay ₦1 million in compensation to the survivor.

GADA's lawyer, Barrister Doris Nduanusi, welcomed the judgment, emphasizing the need for more activism to combat such crimes and ensure perpetrators face consequences.
