Yesterday I did a hard thing. My stepdaughter needed to come home from Chicago. She had her car and all her stuff packed. I wasn’t going to let her drive home heartbroken, and alone. I flew up there yesterday morning. Landed 8 am their time. Then I drove with her all the way back to Charlotte. We got home same day. On that drive we talked for hours. About her last 4 years and everything that has happened. Her heartbreak, her drama, her loses. We talked about her and her relationships.

She talked about teen drama, rumors, her friends, what she missed, who she was happy to see… plans for Halloween and when she wants to pick up school again and where. I told her a lot about my past, and I think a lot of things made sense to her. I was happy to show up for her and help her not do that alone.

I didn’t have to be her mom, I just needed to be her Ellen. I got to show up for her and show her people can be good and supportive and we care about her. I think I did a damn good job. Now she’s home safe at her mothers and I couldn’t be happier with my role in it all. It was a long day. But it was good.

My son got me a cactus for my birthday bc I can’t keep plants alive. Accidentally knocked it into the dishwater and killed it. Heard him coming so I tried to hide it on top of the fridge and it fell behind there. Now it’s dead and behind my fridge.
