I stood at the entrance of the grand mansion, my father’s house, but it never felt like home. My hands trembled as I clutched my small bag—the only thing that truly belonged to me in this place.
The walls whispered painful memories, and the floors bore the weight of my silent suffering. I had grown up here, yet I was nothing more than a visitor. A stranger. An outcast.
My name is Adaora, the first daughter of Chief Nwosu, a wealthy businessman known across the country. But wealth meant nothing when love was absent.
I was the child of a woman my father never truly loved. My mother—once the apple of his eye—was pushed aside when he married another woman, Madam Theresa, a woman whose presence turned my life into a nightmare.
As I stood by the door, my stepsister, Chiamaka, walked past me with a cruel smirk.
“Who let the beggar in?” she sneered.
My throat tightened, but I said nothing. I was used to it. She had made sure to remind me every day that I was nothing.
“Father wants to see you,” she added, flipping her hair as she walked away.
My heart pounded. My father? The same man who barely acknowledged my existence? The same man who let his wife and children treat me like a maid?
I swallowed hard and walked towards his study. Every step felt like a march towards my doom.
As I entered, my father sat behind his massive desk, his expression unreadable.
“Adaora,” he said, his deep voice filling the room.
“Yes, sir,” I replied, lowering my gaze.
He sighed. “You are no longer a child. It’s time we discuss your future.”
Hope flickered in my chest, but it quickly died at his next words.
“You are getting married next month.”
The ground beneath me felt like it was shaking. Married? To who?
I looked up at him, my lips trembling. “But… I don’t even know who—”
“It’s not your place to question my decision,” he cut me off coldly.
I knew better than to argue. In this house, I had no voice.
Little did I know that this marriage would change my life forever—in ways I never imagined.
