EXPORTING POSITIVE STORIES FROM NOLLYWOOD
For years, global perceptions of Nigeria have been shaped by the loudest, not the truest, stories. Hollywood built America's image. Nollywood can, and must, do the same for Nigeria.
During his visit to Inside Nollywood, Nigeria's former Ambassador to Burundi, Elijah Onyeagba, reminded us of something simple but profound:
"What you show people is what you are."
That line stayed with me.
Because for too long, many of our commercial films have leaned on sensationalism; juju tropes, ritual killings, missing pen*ses, crime-driven plots. These stories may entertain, but they also export a distorted image of who we are.
is not a "juju country."
Nigeria is innovation.
Nigeria is diversity.
Nigeria is resilience.
Nigeria is culture, creativity, and brilliance in motion.
With over 250 ethnic groups, a booming tech ecosystem, a bold creative industry, and one of the largest film industries in the world, we have more than enough positive narratives to share.
This doesn't mean ignoring our challenges. Piracy, poor funding, weak cultural research, they are real. But we must approach them with a mindset that builds, not destroys.
The world sees us through the stories we export.
If we keep exporting fear, they will keep consuming fear.
If we export value, culture, innovation, and authenticity, the world will meet a different Nigeria.
Ambassador Onyeagba's call was a reminder of responsibility.
has the power to reshape how Nigeria is perceived globally.
Platforms like Inside Nollywood will continue to champion that mission, because changing our story is a shared duty and a national investment.
Time to reflect.
Time to create differently.
