Sometimes I wonder why some of our youths keep taking hard drugs while remaining unwilling to work.
At my last job in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, we were hired to perform at a VIP burial ceremony. Due to limited parking space around the venue, I parked our bus some distance away where I found a suitable spot.
We played until about 5:30 PM. As we were preparing to round up, I sent one of my crew members to the vehicle to get something for me. On getting there, he discovered that someone had forcefully broken one of the vehicle’s windows and entered the bus. The man was already searching through our bags for things that did not belong to him.
When my boy confronted him, he claimed that he had kept something inside those bags, not knowing that the vehicle and everything inside belonged to us.
My crew member immediately rushed back to alert the rest of us. We quickly went to the vehicle only to discover that some of our clothing items were already missing. We began searching for the suspect and informed people around the area.
Before long, we heard that he had escaped through a nearby farm. We gave chase, and fortunately luck ran out on him. He was eventually caught. The first thing we demanded was that he return our stolen items. He confessed that he had hidden them in a nearby bush. We followed him there and recovered everything he had taken before handing him over to the security personnel at the event.
Honestly, only God knows what could have happened if he had not been caught. There was another bag containing far more valuable items, but he was unable to access it before my worker arrived.
From my observation, he appeared to be one of those young men who refuse to work and instead depend on hard drugs and criminal activities. Interestingly, many villagers around the area told us that he was already known for terrorizing people in that community.
This is a reminder that hard work pays. Drug abuse and crime may seem like shortcuts, but they only lead to destruction, shame, and wasted potential. Our youths must understand that there is dignity in honest labor and that no amount of stolen wealth can replace peace of mind and a good name.
