“You don’t seal deals at Gamescom. You start conversations at Gamescom.” — David Olamide aka

That was one of the insights that stayed with me from Gamescom 2026.

For many African developers and ecosystem builders, international events like Gamescom should be less about an immediate deal and more about getting into the right rooms, meeting the right people and starting conversations that can develop over time.

I’m documenting some of those conversations and connections in WAI Network's Africa at Gamescom: Connecting the Dots report.

A big shoutout to and .agency for collaborating with WAI Network as part of the Gamescom media team. 🌍

Day 1 at Gamescom 🎮🇩🇪

A dream I had for years finally became real.

I made it to Gamescom for the first time! 🥹

My first day was a mix of incredible sessions, escapades with friends, meeting people from different parts of the world, seeing our very own Dean Gichukie 🇰🇪 from Kunta Content | Indie African Game Studio in action as a speaker, discovering new games, and witnessing conversations that could lead to future collaborations.

This is just the beginning. I have interviews and plenty of stories from Gamescom to share.

Thank you to the Africa–Europe Partnerships for Culture: Audio-visual programme, funded by the European Union with co-funding from GIZ and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, jointly implemented by GIZ and Expertise France in a Team Europe approach, for supporting my journey to Gamescom.

I'm also grateful to everyone who took the time to speak with me, share your experience, and be brave enough to tell your story in front of a camera. ❤️

Your voices are now becoming part of something bigger.

We are documenting what we found through an evolving interactive report titled:
🌍 Africa at Gamescom: Connecting the Dots.

Read the interactive report here: https://wendiartit.net/reports/giz-gamescom-report-2026/

It is still a work in progress, and that is intentional. The more we review the conversations, the more connections, questions and stories begin to emerge.

This is only an overview of Day 1.

There are more stories, more conversations and more dots to connect. 🌍🎮

Thank you so much to everyone who showed some love after my first video sharing my journey to Germany. ❤️

I have a monthly newsletter where I’ll be sharing with my community how this opportunity to attend Gamescom came about. If you’re keen to hear the full story, comment “I’m game” and I’ll send you the subscription link. 😉

Anyway… I actually got to go to my dream event, and guys, I had to take some time to soak it all in. 🥹 So, that explains the delay in posting. I also needed to recover from the fatigue and flu that hit me when I got back home, hence the extra week of silence after the event. 😅

BUT NOW… you’re about to get a lot of Gamescom content on your feed, so brace yourself! 😂🎮

There are lots of insights coming for people in the digital creative industries and entrepreneurs too, so keep an eye out for them, and make sure you watch until the end. 😉

Gamescom 2026, here we go! 🇩🇪🎮🌍

In continuation of the VR & Gaming Session series, here are some reflections from Nicholas Njoroge of Goethe-Institut Kenya , along with feedback from a few of the participants.

It was heartwarming to hear how the games made them feel, and even more rewarding to see the joy and excitement on their faces.

The documentation continues. 🎮✨

One thing that stood out from my conversation with Dean Gichukie 🇰🇪 was how much community feedback has increased the team's ambition. 🎮✨

Every playtest, every comment, and every word of encouragement has reminded them that people are genuinely rooting for HIRU.

Good games take time, and it's been amazing to watch the excitement around this one continue to grow. 🇰🇪

A big thank you to Dean Gichukie 🇰🇪 and Jasmine Litu from Kunta Content, as well as Reagan Otieno from Content Nation and Creative Technology, for making the session such a welcoming and engaging experience.

One thing I really appreciated about my conversation with Joanna Oluoch was how intentional she was about sharing her experience.

She even came prepared with notes to help her remember the many insights, conversations, and lessons from the Games and SDG Summit and the Futuregames & Elimu Goal meet-and-greet.

For those of us who couldn't attend, Joanna's reflections offer a valuable glimpse into what was discussed and why these conversations matter for the future of our industry.

Thank you, Joanna, for taking the time to give such a thoughtful and detailed recap of what was an incredible week for the Kenyan video games ecosystem. 🎮✨

More conversations from the series coming soon.
