5 June – 25 July 2026 | Keith Piper: Red Flags

A major exhibition by Keith Piper at Niru Ratnam brings together over four decades of work examining race, power, identity, and historical narratives.
The exhibition includes seminal works from the 1980s, when Piper was a founding member of the BLK Art Group, alongside more recent pieces that continue his exploration of systemic racism and the construction of Black identity.

The title ''Red Flags'' references Piper's response to Operation Raise the Colours, a campaign that promoted the display of English and British flags as symbols of patriotism. Through new works, Piper examines how these symbols can also become vehicles for exclusionary nationalism and the resurgence of far-right xenophobia in contemporary Britain.

Rather than a retrospective, 'Red Flags'presents a continuous dialogue across Piper's career, revealing a practice that has remained remarkably consistent in challenging dominant narratives and interrogating the relationship between image, history, and power. ([Niru Ratnam][1])

This Day in History | Art & Liberation

On June 2, 1863, Harriet Tubman led the Combahee River Raid, a daring military operation that liberated more than 700 enslaved Africans. More than a century later, artist Stephen Towns revisits stories of Black resistance, resilience, and freedom through his powerful textile works.

Towns' art does more than commemorate history—it reclaims it. Through quilting, embroidery, and visual storytelling, he transforms overlooked narratives into living memory, honoring the courage of figures like Tubman while highlighting the collective struggle for liberation. His work invites audiences to see Black history not as a distant past, but as a continuing story of survival, agency, and hope.

By weaving together art and historical memory, Stephen Towns ensures that Harriet Tubman's legacy as a military strategist, liberator, and freedom fighter continues to inspire new generations.

Happy Birthday to Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye — an icon, cultural custodian, and one of the most influential figures in African art.

For more than five decades, Chief Nike has dedicated her life to preserving and elevating traditional Nigerian art forms, especially Adire and batik textile making, while inspiring generations of artists across the world.

Emerging from the Osogbo Art Movement of the 1960s, her work beautifully reimagines Yoruba spirituality, folklore, womanhood, and everyday life through bold patterns, vibrant colors, and powerful storytelling.

Her extraordinary legacy is reflected in the permanent collections of some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art; Guggenheim Abu Dhabi; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the British Library; and many more.

Today, we celebrate not only your birthday, but your immense contribution to art, culture, heritage, and humanity.

May this new year bring you continued strength, joy, good health, and even greater inspiration.

Happy Birthday, Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye. Your legacy continues to shine across generations and continents.

‘WURUS’ an extraordinary presentation by Caroline Gueye, curated by Massamba Mbaye, representing Senegal at the Venice Biennale.

Using gold as both symbol and material language, the exhibition pushes us to question how value is truly created. Is value inherent in an object itself, or is it shaped by history, culture, perception, and systems of power?

Through immersive installations, ‘WURUS’ reminds us that what society treasures is often tied to narratives, memory, and influence, not just material worth. It is a powerful reflection on identity, economics, colonial histories, and the ways we assign meaning to the world around us.

This presentation also opens an important conversation about African contemporary art on the global stage and how African artists continue to reshape international art discourse with bold conceptual storytelling.

What gives something value in today’s world? rarity, money, history, perception, or human connection?
