Stigma as a Thief of Potential🥀

This piece explores how stigma surrounding abortion and reproductive choice quietly steals futures, silences voices, and limits potential.

As a Muslim woman, I’ve experienced how women’s bodies are constantly observed, policed, and debated. The pressure to “cover up” can become rooted not only in faith, but also in shame, fear, and public scrutiny. That experience shaped this work and my understanding of how deeply stigma can affect bodily autonomy.

The surrounding hands represent public opinion and the external forces that attempt to control women’s bodies and choices. The flowers growing from her body symbolize dreams, identity, and possibility. While some continue to bloom, those withering around her lower body reflect the lives, futures, and parts of self that stigma slowly destroys.

Through this piece, I wanted to portray stigma not just as judgment, but as something capable of taking life from potential before it has the chance to fully bloom.
