A GIANT IN THE NIGERIA FASHION

The Chief Executive of Ade Bakare Couture, Bakare came into the fashion scene in 1991 and also made exploits. His work has been described as “classic with a touch of modernity.”

The creative director of Tiffany Amber, Folarin-Coker launched out in 1998. And by 2008, in a first of its kind for an African, she showcased her collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. The collection was praised by such rave review that she was invited to showcase her collections the second time, making her the first African designer to showcase for two consecutive shows at the New York Fashion Week.

Mai Atafo, Mudi, Lisa Folawiyo, Frank Oshodi, Modela, Z**i Cardow, Soares Anthony and Lola Faturoti, among others, also made their marks and put Nigerian and African fashion on the global map, by continually innovating, recreating and redesigning local fabrics with mixture of African and foreign touches, fusing fabrics to create styles with diverse appeal.

NO doubt, Nigerians are fashion-conscious. This has, in no small measure, affected the fashion industry in the country. To satisfy local and international demands, Nigerian fashion designers have, over the years, stepped up their game in terms of creativity and output. And they now rub shoulders with acclaimed designers from other climes at international fashion exhibitions.

Equally, the Nigerian fashion industry has witnessed phenomenal growth, with the emergence of exceptional designers, who are introducing interesting dynamics in the use of African and foreign fabric, to make bespoke outfits.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), says that the “textile, apparel, and footwear” sector has averaged a growth of 17 per cent since 2010. This rise has been fuelled by an increase in demand for and partly by unprecedented initiatives that continue to push Nigerian fashion globally.

The role of the African fashion value chain in creating jobs and inclusive growth has become one of the project of AFDB.

The African Development Bank debut Fashionomics in May during it's annual general meeting to discuss ways to strengthen the global value chain of Africa's fashion industry.

The AFDB believes global value chains are Paramount to boost inclusive growth.

Fashion also offers tremendous scope for African countries to participate in regional and global integration.

With fashionomics, AFDB aims to invest in the fashion sector, to provide access to finance for entrepreneurs, and to incubate and accelerate starts up by identifying and financing projects.

Lady Gaga is on the spotlight again rocking the African design.

Granted, some of Lady Gaga’s fashion choices can be pretty questionable but she looks fab (and quite normal for a change) in this African print jacket. We adore how the shirt ruffles and cinches her in at the waist, and we just can't get enough of those purple gloves and heels!

Over the last few decades, African print fabrics have received growing global recognition and acclaim, and it's really no wonder. African fabric is so immense, intricate and beautiful, with a wonderful range of bold colors and designs.

Here at Grass-fields we handmake a range of African wax print clothing, but we recognize there are a range of techniques and fabrics used in the manufacturing process.

These are the top three ways to make African print:

Ankara wax print fabric - this undergoes an intricate process whereby wax patterns (which stop color reaching certain parts of the fabric) are transferred onto the fabric, then dyes are added bit by bit

Bogolan (mud cloth) is produced via the painstaking process of colors being painted onto the cloth (often via hand) using stencils and natural pigments from the earth and other elements of nature.

Kente is cloth that is intricately woven to produce stunning, colorful fabrics and bold designs that are often used as ceremonial cloths by many Africans and African Americans.

All three can be used to represent culture, status, fashion or personality - it's all dependent on the person at hand. One thing is certain though - whilst wearing African clothing, you're bound to always stand out!

So it's no surprise that African print fabrics have started to take the world by storm, and we love it!

F. R. E. E. T. H. O. U. G. H. T. O. N. T. E. X. T. I. L. E.

Yesterday I was obsessed with the long thought about the Nigeria textile industry and tears 😢 was writing an epitaph on my face. I was dazzled in thoughts as to what possibly can bring back the industry🏭.

I had a nostalgia of how kaduna use to be an industrial state and how the town where I was born carried the burden of the textile companies🏭.

Kakuri is an ancient town filled with 90% textile factories in kaduna, rich with the sales of different African fabrics, quality in texture and designs, the heart of kaduna comprising different languages, dialect and ethnic groups, a beautiful place to behold 🤭

Today, the story is a tragedy and the place is an eye sore, factories have become dumping ground for faeces, breeding ground for reptiles🦎, shooting location for filmmakers🎥 and stealing area for hoodlums🤒. The glory of this wonderful place has been shattered.

I imagined a textile factory that employed over 7,000 - 9,000 individuals, how many could the 9 - 12 textile factories employ put together? How many families are now in abject poverty because of our government carelessness about the importance of the people 👨‍👨‍👦‍👦👬

My question is; what could have been the problem that brought the textile factories down?
Is it a problem that is beyond repair?
Why is the government talking about reviving Ajeokuta and saying nothing about the textile?
If the African fashion industry is worth $15.5 billion as postulated, and we have not even see 1/3 of it, would rejuvenating the textile not move Nigeria close to increasing our GDP through fashion?

Our textile companies happen to be one of the high quality producers of textile fabrics in Africa, why is it left behind as if the country gains nothing from it? This country is endowned with wealth, riches and potentials, the only problem we have is how to maximize it.

In recent times, the global demand and discussions on African inspired clothing has led to tremendous boost in sales for some African designers and brands whose works have caught the eyes of international personalities including Beyonce, Michelle Obama, Rihanna, and Thandie Newton. The potential for this billion dollar market has birthed a need for African-led ecommerce fashion platforms to create structures that will not only cater to global demands, but also help upcoming brands to thrive.

With a population of 170 million, the fashion ecommerce industry in Nigeria is still underserved, a weak match for the growing internet users in the country. However, a Nigerian company is making waves by leveraging on technology to create an online platform that would be a one-stop shop for fashion. Fashpa.com is Nigeria’s premier online fashion retailer. Fashpa is vertically integrated; it designs, manufactures and distributes its line of clothing. It retails the clothing online and offers delivery throughout Africa and the World.

Fashpa started (meaning Fashion Parade), out of frustration of not being able to access quality fashion following the demand in styles in Nigeria after several years living abroad. Africans have the same modern sophisticated fashion tastes and love for fashion when compared to consumers elsewhere in the world. The only difference between us and a consumer in London is access to that fashion. Fashpa wanted to bridge that gap using technology, by creating an online fashion platform targeted at style conscious consumers who wanted quality, variety and convenience, at affordable prices.

What began as a simple idea to solve a problem with access to fashion has evolved into a powerful business model and a renewed focus on solving the problem. Fashpa began as a marketplace retailer, carrying foreign brands such as Zara, H&M, Steve Madden, Topshop and a few others. In addition to the brands it previously carried, it also produced her own Fashpa line.
A year ago, Fashpa started something called the Fit Project, a small project using big data to analyse customer measurement data and using that data to manufacture better fitting garments and also to offer a more personalised service to the customer, the customer feedback from that was amazing. Customer’s wanted high quality clothes that fit well.
