β’ Egbe Chukwualuka Kingsley My Entry for the Lagos Igbo Hangout 2.0
Theme: βIJE NRI NDI IGBOβ
I made Ofe OΜ£soΜ£ OΜ£kuΜ£, a traditional Igbo soup that has been part of our heritage for generations. The name comes from OΜ£kuΜ£βan old pounding tool used before mortar and pestle became common. What makes this soup truly special is that itβs completely fireless. Ingredients like dried pepper, Ogiri Igbo, dried fish, salt, and Cameroon pepper are all used raw.
Everything is prepared by pounding the ingredients together inside a mortar, with the pestle serving as both a tool and a spoon. One unique touch from the past is the use of the blackened back of the cooking pot (the part darkened by fire) as a vegetable in the soup.
Our mothers often made this soup in the old days. Itβs quick, easy, and full of rich, earthy flavor. Ofe OΜ£soΜ£ OΜ£kuΜ£ is more than just a mealβitβs a bold, beautiful reminder of Igbo tradition, wisdom, and creativity.
