OUR RESPONSIBILITY:

As Nigeria celebrates another Democracy Day, we are called not only to celebrate the freedom and democratic journey we have inherited, but also to reflect on the Nigeria we have always dreamed of; a nation where justice is respected, leadership is accountable, citizens are valued, and every Nigerian has the opportunity to live with dignity.

Since the return to democratic governance in 1999, Nigeria has experienced an extended period of civilian rule, with political disagreements increasingly addressed through elections, institutions, the courts and legislative processes. June 12 has been observed as Democracy Day since 2018, in remembrance of the democratic struggle surrounding the 1993 presidential election and the sacrifices made by many Nigerians.

But democracy is more than the casting of votes. Democracy is a responsibility.

Our journey so far has shown both the progress we have made and the work that remains. The Nigeria we dreamt of cannot be built by government alone. It requires citizens who understand their rights and responsibilities, leaders who see public office as a trust, institutions that uphold the rule of law, and a society that refuses to make corruption, violence, intolerance and indifference normal.

Our responsibility

As citizens, our responsibility goes beyond elections. We must participate in governance, demand accountability peacefully, respect the rights of others, protect public institutions, obey the law and contribute positively to our communities.

As leaders, the responsibility is even greater: power must be matched with responsibility, position with service, and public trust with accountability.

The journey ahead requires us to move from merely asking, “What can Nigeria give me?” to also asking, “What can I contribute to the Nigeria I dream of?”

The dreams of those who fought for democracy must not end with the attainment of political freedom...

Niger Declares End to “Injustice” of Uranium Exports: “Our Resources Will Now Be Managed by Us and for Us

In a forceful address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Niger’s Prime Minister Lamine Zeine Ali Mahaman delivered a stark message on the country’s natural resources, declaring that decades of unequal uranium trade are over.

“For more than half a century, uranium… Niger’s uranium has lit the cities of Europe. While our cities have remained in darkness. That injustice is now over. It is at an end,” the Prime Minister said.

He added: “Our resources will now be managed by us and for us.”

The remarks form a central part of Niger’s broader assertion of sovereignty under the leadership of President Abdourahamane Tchiani and the Alliance of Sahel States. The Prime Minister stated that Niger has recovered full control of the Société des Mines de l’Aïr (SOMAIR) and will now sell its uranium on the international market in full transparency, while complying with nuclear non-proliferation obligations.

The speech framed the shift as the end of an era in which Niger’s uranium powered Europe while the country itself faced energy shortages and limited development benefits.

Niger emphasised it remains open to partnerships based on equality and mutual interest, but will no longer accept external restrictions on its right to manage and choose buyers for its resources.

Instead of a 15-minute speech, a 100-minute speech! Gaddafi tore up the UN Charter and threw it on the floor in front of world leaders.....!😮

In the 40 years since Muammar Gaddafi came to power, Gaddafi has never attended a UN General Assembly. When he first set foot in New York in 2009, the whole world knew something was going to happen. And that's exactly what happened...

According to the rules of the United Nations, each country's head of state is allotted only 15 minutes to give a speech. But when Gaddafi got on the podium, he began speaking in fluent Arabic, ignoring the clock. 1 minute, 2 minutes passed, and the time passed for 1 hour and 37 minutes (about 100 minutes)!

The poor UN official Libyan interpreter, Fuad Jalit, was so exhausted from translating Gaddafi's high-voltage speech non-stop that, 80 minutes into the speech, he almost fainted into the live microphone and shouted, "I can't take it anymore!" (I can't take it anymore!). Then another interpreter was forced to come and take over. 20 minutes to handle! 😂

Gaddafi's main grievance was the exclusive "veto" power of the 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council (America, Britain, France, Russia, China). He was directly attacking the "powers".
​He said in a loud voice, from 1945 to today, this Security Council has not been able to provide any security to small countries. They have only given war, aggression and sanctions! It is wrong to call it the Security Council, it is actually a ******* council!
​It does not end here, he pointed his finger at the United States and demanded an international investigation into the assassination of former US President John F. Kennedy and the unjust Iraq war of 2003. He even expressed doubts about whether the swine flu virus that spread at that time was a military biological weapon created in a laboratory or not!
​At one point in his speech, Gaddafi held up the official book of the UN Charter in front of everyone........

Our Responsibility as Citizens; A Clarion Call for Sustainability, Economic Reform and Nation Building.

Nation building is not the responsibility of Government alone; it is a collective Responsibility of every Citizen. Our Responsibility goes beyond demanding Good Leadership; it includes Responsible Citizenship, Accountability, Productivity, Respect for National Values and active Participation in the Development of our Communities and Nation.

As Nigeria faces Economic, Social and Developmental challenges, there is an urgent need for Sustainable solutions and meaningful Economic reforms that create opportunities, strengthen human capital, support entrepreneurship, promote innovation and reduce Dependence on unsustainable practices.

This is therefore a clarion call to Citizens, Leaders, Institutions, Businesses and young Nigerians to move from criticism to Constructive action; from individual interest to National interest; and from short-term gains to Sustainable Development.

A better Nigeria requires Responsible Citizens, purposeful Leadership and Collective Action.

Gambo Sawaba lost her father at just 10 and her mother at 13. Soon afterwards, she was married to an older former soldier who had served in World War II. She had her only child the age of at 16.

A year later, at 17, she became a politician, advocating against child marriage and for women's rights, and suffered many years of beating and abuse in the process.

Gambo Sawaba described herself as “a member of the House of Prison.” She was jailed 16 times during her lifetime for her political activism, making her one of the most persecuted female politicians in Nigerian history.
