Nigerian Art Music is a lively blend of tradition and innovation, showcasing the nation's rich cultural legacy. Its allure is found not just in the melodies and harmonies, but also in its deep ties to the people and the land. The tonal characteristics of many Nigerian languages give the music a distinctive linguistic essence, merging spoken word with song and forming a symbiotic bond that resonates profoundly with audiences. This linguistic link, along with the significant cultural richness rooted in Nigerian traditions, adds layers of meaning and historical context to the music, turning each piece into a mesmerizing story that speaks to the heart. "Ive Omaka is an expression of celebration. The Igboid communities in Africa are known for their frequent exclamations. Typically, this occurs when something significant occurs, such as the birth of a child, a noteworthy achievement, unexpected death, or endowments. Ive Omaka as used by the composer is about a positive occurrence. Occasionally, you'll hear 'ewooo, heiii, eloolooo' in a high-pitched tone." Chike Akwarandu.

Ive Omaka was composed by Joshua Uzoigwe and performed by the elegant Vera Onah, she is accompanied by Ayo Ajayi. NAM 2023 production.

Sometimes in 2022, Femi Ogunrombi sent us digital manuscripts containing many of his folk song arrangements so that they could be featured in our Nigerian Art Music Concert.

He passed away some months later while we were preparing for this concert that featured one of his compositions.
