Why Governors Must See Legislature As Partners, Not Appendages - Obasa, Lawmakers

- Lagos Assembly urges NASS to criminalise acts against Parliamentary independence

- wants more recognitions for past Speakers

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on governors in Nigeria to avoid seeing state legislatures as appendages of the executive but instead, treat lawmakers as partners in the progress and development of states.

The House, which described the legislature as the bedrock of democracy, further called on the National Assembly to criminalise any action that violates the independence of the parliament.

The House passed the resolutions in commemoration of the 2024 edition of the International Day of Parliamentarism celebrated on June 30.

The House further urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to recognise past speakers of the Lagos Assembly for their contributions to the state's growth and development.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, emphasised the significance of honouring past speakers who have served and contributed to the development of the state.

Dr. Obasa asserted that without the parliament, there is no democracy. He highlighted the institution's crucial role in governance through lawmaking, motions and resolutions.

He described the International Day of Parliamentarism as a day to "do more to draw the attention of Nigerians to the importance of the legislature."

While congratulating parliamentarians across the country for their contributions toward the nation's development, Obasa said: "It is also important to note that a government has three arms, and if one is missing, there is no government.

"Since 1979 when this House was established under Alhaji Lateef Jakande, none of the past speakers have been celebrated.

"We should celebrate those who have represented us well and convey to the National Assembly the need to allow Houses of Assembly to practise what the constitution says about the parliament effectively and to provide the necessary support.

"The governors should also give the political will to the parliament to enable it to perform its duties as stated in the constitution," Dr. Obasa added.

Other lawmakers who contributed supported that the parliament should be celebrated while applauding the leadership of Speaker Obasa.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa constituency 2, said the role of a parliament cannot be overemphasised.

"Democracy is all about the parliament. It is a bridge between the people and government, but we are sometimes underappreciated as representatives of the people. There is no gap between the parliament and the people. There is no type of government that can exist without parliament," he said.

Hon. Desmond Elliot (Surulere ) noted that nothing occurs in a state without the input of the parliament while Hon. Sa'ad Olumoh described parliamentarians as stabilisers of the polity who deserve to be celebrated.

Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu urged that the House should consider being a part of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Lagos intensifies strategic projects despite weather condition, Opebi-Mende bridge 85% completion

Despite heavy rainfall in the past few weeks, the Lagos State Government has continued to make progress on its infrastructure projects designed to improve the road network and ease traffic problems across the State.

During a fact-finding visit to five strategic projects, the Special Adviser, Office of Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso took pressmen on a tour of ongoing projects including Abiola-Onijemo link bridge and the five-kilometre Ikeja Urban Regeneration Project covering Oduduwa Way, Odudunmu, Sobo Arobiodu and Sasegbon Streets.

The team also visited the Opebi Mende-link Bridge and adjoining roads, Arowojobe Link Bridge in Maryland, Agidi Demurin and Church Street Network and Saint Finbarrs Road (UNILAG to Abule Okuta-Soluyi) Deeper Life Church, both in Kosofe Local Government.

On completion, the Opebi link bridge will ease traffic gridlock and make the travel experience seamless for residents of Ikeja, Maryland and others who travel to Lagos Island and vice-versa on a daily basis.

Omotoso said the intention of the government was to roll out infrastructure that would cut the time spent by motorists to and from the airport by creating a shorter route to link Ikorodu Road and the axial roads.

The Commissioner said, “We have been going around since morning and what we have seen is the testimony to the fact that Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is not resting on his oars. There are so many things that have been completed and so many in the pipeline alike.

“We saw that despite the rains, contractors were at work, it shows that we're forging ahead despite the weather”.

Also speaking, Engineer Daramola, Special Adviser, said Mr. Governor directed that despite the weather that slowed down the construction work, contractors must work assiduously to ensure the completion of all projects on schedule.

“This tour is part of our effort to ensure that all our contractors are up and doing. Most of the projects have very commendable progress and be as it may, the major challenge in time is the issue of the rain. The issue of the weather is very critical, however, I assure you that public works are up and running”, he said.

The contractors on each of the sites visited thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu and Special Adviser for providing the support and resources required to maintain the pace and quality of work on the projects.

Expressing satisfaction with the conduct of youths attached to Julius Berger to acquire practical knowledge on bridge building, the Project Manager, Dymtry Denysenko, noted that the students were being trained to use new trends in technology for the development of iconic structures.

One of the students who spoke during the tour of projects, Apologun Onetere, a 400-level student of Babcock University, said that the experience has been thrilling.

“I have learnt a lot about piling which is the foundation of building a bridge. It's so refreshing to see things in practice. I appreciate this experience. These iconic projects demonstrate the administration's commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure, driving economic growth, and transforming the State into a hub of innovation and progress”, she said.

Arowojobe Link Bridge and Road are 77% completed, St. Finbarrs Road is 70%, Abiola-Onijemo Link Road with Bridge is 80%, Ikeja GRA regeneration project is 89% per cent completed while Opebi-Mende Link Bridge and adjoining roads are 85% per cent completed.

I was at Panti on Tuesday 22nd February, to meet with the IPO on the Iyaloja Playbook piracy matter against the Chairman Bookshop Owners Association Mushin Chapter and conspirators arrested on Wednesday 9th February 2022

I was shocked when he told me that the 4 accuse who had failed to report for the 3 appointments for an Alternative Dispute Resolution ADR as suggested by the police, after they were bailed, said they have reported the matter to Zone 2 and so they were advised not to bother report at Panti.

The IPO, also expressed surprise, said that he's waiting for the order, although I am surprised at the development.

The Iyaloja Playbook pirated copies are all over the place, pirated by this wicked bookshops owners. They've sent people to beg and even threatened me in the last two weeks after they were caught.

Iyaloja Playbook was conceptualized as flagship publication to immortalize distinguished citizens who have contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of the state.

In essence this gesture to immortalize our heroes past will certainly boost the sense of history in coming generations as well as modulate their community interpersonal relationships for descent conduct and reduction of criminality.

The Lagos State Government is in accord with this vision that the Iyaloja Playbook was approved as reading material for Junior Secondary School JSS 3.

Unfortunately the good intension of the exercise has been hindered by some criminals that pirated the Iyaloja Playbook to frustrate the author and totally jeopardize the vision.

Copyright infringement basically entails the violation and piracy of an author's exclusive right through the unauthorized use of a creative work of an author.

As a general matter an author’s creative work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner means infringement.

To encourage enterprise amongst our people we must do our best to discourage negative activities of criminals and this expected role performance is a salient legislative role.

I need to put in focus the case of piracy of the Iyaloja Playbook by one Mr Festus and conspirators.

It will interest you to know that Festus is Chairman Bookshop Owners Association, Mushin Chapter. This clear case of abuse of office and should be discouraged in all ramifications

Upon discovery of the piracy infringement, the Nigeria Police Force was notified and they swung to action to establish the basis to prove the criminality and this was done efficiently.

Equipped with Police finding, the National Assembly and Lagos State House of Assembly should do their best to protect innocent citizens doing legitimate businesses to earn legal livelihood.

Thank you and God bless
