“If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.”
My first question was: How do I make a calligraphy piece imperfect?
Instead of aiming for flawless lettering, I embraced the idea behind the quote. I combined Blackletter, Foundational, and Italic hands, deliberately turned some of the letters in “PERFECTION” upside down, and even allowed the composition to change when I ran out of space for the final letters.
What would usually feel like “mistakes” became part of the artwork.
As calligraphers, we’re often striving for precision. This piece reminded me that creativity doesn’t always live in perfection, it often lives in the freedom to experiment, adapt, and keep creating
