Yesterday in Church one of the major things I learnt was that if we obey the commandment of love, and pray in tongues, we will become God's friend and He will reveal things to come to us and as we declare them, they will come to pass!

In the storm with Jesus (1)

‘‘Let us cross over to the other side.’’
Mark 4:35 NKJV
Growing in faith and getting to know Jesus intimately requires going through storms with Him. The disciples discovered this when Jesus said to them, ‘Let us cross over to the other side.’ Next, we read: ‘A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling’ (v. 37 NKJV). Their story has a happy ending. Jesus calmed the storm, and they said in amazement, ‘Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!’ (v. 41 NKJV). There are life-changing truths Jesus taught and aspects of His character that you will never understand until you have been through a storm with Him. Sometimes when storms come, we assume they are the result of something we have done wrong or that we’re not in the will of God. The disciples were in the storm due to obedience, not disobedience. They hadn’t done anything wrong; they had done something right. Understand this: even if you love Jesus with all your heart, you will still face storms. As the disciples discovered, the storm can come when you’re closest to Jesus. He doesn’t promise that the storm won’t strike your boat but that the storm won’t sink it. He doesn’t promise smooth sailing, but He guarantees a safe landing. You will face life’s troubles with either fear or faith. How are they different? Fear concentrates on the storm; faith concentrates on the Saviour. It may sound surprising, but we need storms. Jesus permits us to sail into them so that we will 1) consider His promises, 2) stay calm in His presence, and 3) have confidence in His power.

Jesus wants to spend time with you!
26 August 2024
‘‘Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.’’
Luke 10:40 NIV
Mary and Martha were similar in that they both loved Jesus. But the difference showed up when He visited their home. ‘Martha opened her home to him…Mary…sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed…Mary has chosen what is better”’ (vv. 38-42 NIV). Jesus didn’t say that what Martha was doing was not good. He said that what Mary was doing was better. What was Mary doing? Sitting at His feet, listening to His words, loving and adoring Him. There is a lesson here, particularly for those involved in church work and ministry. Don’t get so involved in the work of the Lord that you fail to get involved with the Lord of the work. E.M. Bounds said, ‘To be much alone with God is the secret of knowing Him and of influence with Him.’ Question: if you are not being influenced by God, who or what is influencing you? People? Pressures? Circumstances? If Jesus had come for dinner, He may well have commended Martha and told Mary to get busy in the kitchen. But His priority, before going to the cross, was to spend time with those He loved. Here is a thought that will change your attitude towards prayer: Jesus wants to spend time with you!

Live in the light (1)
17 August 2024
‘‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’’
John 8:12 NKJV
A pastor writes: ‘Have you ever heard the term achluophobia? It is the fear of darkness…Being in complete darkness is unnerving. It induces a sense of helplessness. And yet physical darkness is nothing compared to emotional, relational, and spiritual darkness.’ Today you may feel like you’re in a dark place with no way out: ‘My girlfriend left me for another man.’ Or, ‘I’m probably heading towards divorce. My husband has been cheating on me.’ Or, ‘I’m depressed and cry for no reason. When will these feelings go away?’ Or, ‘I’m wrestling with a terrible illness, and I’m basically housebound. I am in a dark place and need help.’ If that’s your story, there is help, and there is hope. Jesus said, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’ If you’re willing to turn to Him today, you will discover that He can illuminate your path and show you the way out of the darkness you’re in. When you turn on the light, darkness has to leave. And Jesus is the light that removes our spiritual and emotional darkness. Notice that Jesus didn’t say He is a light, or one among many, but instead the light. He didn’t say He is light just for some, but the light of the world. Regardless of whether you live in London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Toronto, or Timbuktu, Jesus is your answer. If you’re living in darkness, He is inviting you to come to Him and step into the light.

How to have peace (4)
11 JUNE 2024
‘Be still, and know that I am God.’
Psalm 46:10 NIV

To have peace you must focus on God’s presence. What you choose to focus on either fuels your fears or your faith. The Bible says, ‘You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you’ (Isaiah 26:3 NIV). That verse could be reduced to one sentence: ‘Get your focus in order − look at me.’ The psalmist says, ‘God is…an ever-present help in trouble’ (Psalm 46:1 NIV). Later in that psalm, He reminds us, ‘Be still, and know that I am God’ (v. 10 NIV).

These verses were written during the time of Hezekiah. Enemy armed forces had surrounded Jerusalem and the Israelites were tense, so they prayed this prayer! And five minutes before noon, God struck the Assyrians with a plague and 185,000 of them perished. Jerusalem was saved, and everyone was joyful. This psalm helps us remember that God is our refuge. No matter how overwhelming the odds seem, He is always with you to help.

This psalm informs us of two things about receiving God’s help in times of trouble. The first thing is to ‘be still’. Many of our troubles come from our inability to sit still. The second thing is to ‘know that I am God’. Did you know that in the middle of a hurricane or tornado there is a quiet centre referred to as an eye? Likewise, though everything is blowing apart around you, you can have a quiet centre. Be still and know. When you live this way, ‘the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds’ (Philippians 4:7 NIV). When you think about it, it’s the only sane way to live!

One Saturday in April 1994, my friend Abimbola Okunribido and I went to Pintos Piano Bar.
Actually we first went to watch an Ola Rotimi play at the Unilag Auditorium. It was such a great outing, I wanted more.
So I suggested that we go to Pintos Piano Bar on Allen Avenue. Sammy Okposo (of blessed memory) and many other talented singers and musicians used to sing there. It also had slots for audience participation.
Unknown to me, my Mom had led Abimbola's Mom to Christ, and Abimbola too had gotten born again.

So she agreed to go to Pintos with me, only on condition that I went to Church(Freedom Hall), with her the following day.
I agreed.

Sunday morning was far! (At least that is how I felt.)

So we went to Pintos, I had fun (or so I thought) and we went back to my flat at about 4am.

The next morning Abimbola woke me up.

A bargain was a bargain.

I got dressed groggily and went with her to Church.

Apparently it was a massive set up. The heavens had conspired with the earth. That was the day I gave my life to Christ and to the glory of God, I haven't looked back since.

God is faithful.

Today I celebrate 30 years as a child of God. Blood bought redeemed free from the law of sin and death, a citizen of heaven living àn abundant life!

Happy birthday to me.
