On this episode of 'Culture Mix', we journey through 'The Weight of Disposable Dreams', a powerful exhibition by Lagos-based artist and doctor, Adetokunbo Adetuyi

His works turn plastic waste into beautiful reflections of memory, consumption, and hope. A reminder that even in what we throw away, there are stories worth keeping.

In DUALITY OF TIME, curated by .africa, Uchay Joel Chima invites us into this mutable realm. Over the course of 3 weeks, the artist transformed the EcoBank PanAfrican Centre’s gallery space into an arena where shadows and light, decay and regeneration, silence and voice converge. Through material alchemy — charcoal, wire, thread, reclaimed objects — Chima gives shape to what time hides and reveals. Working at the intersection of memory, matter, and social consciousness, the exhibition gestured toward the dual forces that tether us: what once was, and what might yet become. As viewers move through the works, they are asked to inhabit time, question its dualities, and reimagine our relationship to history and hope.

Uchay Joel Chima is a Nigerian artist (born 1971) known for experimenting with mixed media, combining found objects and materials (strings, sand, wax, charcoal, old sacks, etc.) with paint and other media.

In past writing, Chima’s works have been described as deceptively simple at first glance, but layered, with material experimentation and metaphorical depth in how he uses thread, rope, texture, and negative space.

In this episode of 'CULTURE MIX', we head to Rele Lagos for the dual exhibition 'Of Mind and Myth', featuring the works of and David

Through very different but equally powerful approaches, these two artists explore myth, the mind, and the human condition. Their practices invite us to think about how stories — ancient and modern, sacred and playful — shape the way we see ourselves and the world around us.

David Ngaji’s practice draws on myth, allegory, and philosophy to ask deep questions about our existence, while David ‘Kaydee’ Otaru’s work disrupts perception, exploring neurodivergence and technology through bold visual experimentation.

Together, their works don’t just tell stories — they fracture and reimagine them, asking us to look again, and look deeper.

'FROM THE ARCHIVES PF ULI'
Moderated by and

The concept of Uli originated from Igbo communities of Southeastern Nigeria.
Uli designs were used on the body, walls, and fabrics.

Considered by some researchers as largely a women’s practice in times past, its influence has now permeated into contemporary art and design.

This session would be a dive into core principles of Uli: line, asymmetry, abstraction, negative space, temporality (ephemeral art).

It would also be a call to action to explore Uli in everyday creativity, design and storytelling.

There would be a display of Uli-influenced artworks as well.

To add the icing on the cake, two renowned artists and scholars and .chijioke.5 from the Nsukka school would enlighten the audience better on Uli as philosophy, heritage, and a living contemporary resource.

The Secret Place, a powerful solo exhibition by Christopher Samuel Idowu

Rooted in personal reflection and collective memory, this exhibition explored Idowu’s experiential connection to the divine. Through painting, drawing, mixed media, sound, and installation, ‘The Secret Place’ bridged the temporal and the eternal, showcasing works that feel both earthly and ethereal.

Chief ARTvocate guides viewers through this sacred space where the interior life meets the external world. It’s deeply moving and thought-provoking.

ARTIST TALK
In conversation with Christopher Samuel Idowu on his exhibition The Secret Place. Moderated by Ladunni Lambo.

Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Kó, Ikoyi Lagos.

The Secret Place, a solo exhibition by Christopher Samuel Idowu. Rooted in personal reflection and collective memory, this exhibition explores Idowu’s experiential connection to the divine. His visual language bridges the temporal and the eternal, the solitary and the communal, drawing on spirituality as a way of understanding selfhood, purpose, and belonging.
Idowu’s multidisciplinary practice—encompassing painting, drawing, mixed media, sound, and installation—reflects on themes of memory, transience, and transformation. His works capture moments that feel both earthly and ethereal, rendered in a palette that suggests natural earth tones, faded walls, or weathered patina. These muted tones are punctuated with subtle highlights, such as gold leaf or soft washes, that create a quiet sense of illumination.

Working across materials including acrylic, conte crayon, charcoal, pastel, spray paint, and silkscreen printing, Idowu often combines several media within a single work. This layered approach results in richly tactile surfaces. His frequent use of silkscreen and gestural mark-making reflects an interest in repetition, erosion, and memory—recalling aged prints, faded photographs, or spiritual relics.

His compositions often center on the human figure, portrayed in contemplative or symbolic states that are partially obscured, silhouetted, or veiled. Other works lean into abstraction, suggesting moments of divine encounter. Titles often reference Christian scripture and parables, allowing the works to function as contemporary icons. Many are produced in serial format as diptychs or triptychs, mirroring the structures of spiritual practice. Infused with a devotional sensibility, The Secret Place becomes both sanctuary and testimony—a sacred space where the interior life meets the external world.
