SHOULD WOMEN.HEAD OR PASTOR CHURCHES OF CHRIST?
SHOULD THEY BE HEAD OVER THEIR HUSBANDS AT HOME?
SHOULD WOMEN BE CONSECRATED AS BISHOPS AND ARCHBISHOPS?
There is has being a large proliferation of churches in Nigeria in the past 15 years, founded by and pastored by women who profess to the prophetesses.
We have also seen the emergence of female bishops, recent appointment of Bishop Felix Adejumo's wife being an evidence.
The first female archbishop in the history of Nigeria and probably Africa at the time of her consecration, was evidenced in Margaret Idahosa, widow of late Benson Idahosa of church of God mission, headquartered in Benin- City, Nigeria, West Africa.
Does the Bible, God's Holy Scriptures endorse such a practice? See 2Timothy 3:16-17 (The Bible).
Going back to the Bible book of Genesis, we had a record of the first woman, Eve, having a private encounter with the Serpent, who was possessed by the devil. While away ftom her husband, Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which Yahweh ( God) had forewarned in the hearing of Adam and Eve not to eat.
Eve took upon herself the role of leadership, did not go to consult with her husband, Adam, but solely decided to disobey God's instruction.
Eve also seduced her husband, Adam, to eat of same forbidden fruit, and both sinned.
Adam and Eve's disobedience to God brought about consequences, punishment: Eve was to bear children in labour and was be controlled and led by her husband having proved herself an incapable leader in the events that led to their fall. Eve revealed that, a woman's mind and heart was easily vulnerable to the devil's manipulation and control when left alone, unguided to face satan in direct encounters, and by such, incapable of providing spiritual cover and leadership over men and the church.
Furthermore, there is record in Scriptures were women were appointed as early apostles ( none was numbered among the twelve Jesus Christ chose); no woman was appointed as pastor or bishop over any of the early churches in New Testament Scriptures.
Even under the Mosaic Old Testament law, no women were appointed as either high priests(reserved strictly for the sons of Aaron) or priests of the children of Levi (strictly a male role) to function in the temple.
The nation of Israel never had women appointed as king's to rule the realm.
From where did this misconception and practice of women church pastors or bishops aŕise?
It is commonly argued by proponents of the view that women can head churches, that, " in Christ, there is no longer Jew or Gentiles, male or female, bond or free: that we all have being made to become one in Christ". See Galatians 3:28 (The Bible).
Galatians 3:28 (King James Bible)
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
New King James Version
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
New American Standard Bible
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
The above is the biblical Scripture that proponents use to defend their view that women can head churches. Sadly this Scripture is being wrongly interpreted and applied.
CORRECT EXEGESIS (Interpretation from the text)
"Oneness in Christ" implies, men and women have equal and direct access to God through Christ to drink of his manifold blessings and benefits, indicating no partiality with God.
However, this Scripture does not negate or reverse the distinct and individual divinely appointed roles that men and women ought to play at home, in society and in the church.
"The head of the woman is the man; Christ is head over the man; and God is head over Christ".
See 1Corinthians 11:3 (The Bible):
King James Bible
But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
New King James Version
But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
New American Standard Bible
But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.
If there is no reference in the New Testament where the divine rule concerning the role of women in home and in church leadership was broken, it becomes clearly evident, that, WOMEN ARE NOT PERMITTED TO PASTOR CHURCHES.
The role of women is pastoring children and women groups, not pastorinh men or the church of Christ.
