DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The issue of domestic violence is becoming more and more intense in our society, and it seems like the more complaints the victims make, the less attention they get from family, friends, religious leaders, and even the law enforcement agencies who sometimes wade in to push such cases under the carpet. Simply because most people think it’s a family affair or that it’s a one-sided campaign against the other gender hence, it should be handled outside the law. Therefore am asking, when are we going to stop waiting till the complainers become diseased? , Is it until we wake up one morning to realize that the victims of this soul-seeking demon are now our beloved mothers, lovely daughters our only sisters, children, or even our brothers and fathers? Because the case of Emmanuel Ikujuni, the young man allegedly killed by his wife in Ondo State for speaking with another woman on the phone confirms that the assailants are not always men and that this outcry is not just for women.
But just so you know, it is globally estimated that 736 million women (almost 1 in 3) are reported to have experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner with 38% of all murders (women) being committed by intimate partners. And, unfortunately, our own beloved OSINACHI the gospel singer and Bimbo, IVD’s wife happens to be some of the victims. What about children?, according to UNICEF 6 out of 10 Nigerian children fall victim to domestic violence and most of them will not speak out due to the fear of oppression, stigmatization, and other factors, including the culture of silence, poor implementation of laws, and the lack of support for victims
For this reason, I am setting up a consortium to connect and unite individuals and organizations, especially Legal practitioners and philanthropists to join me work on domestic violence issues while raising awareness for this same cause.
Therefore I want to urge all members of the public, and law enforcement agencies to be aware that every domestic violence case is a potential murder case, hence. Early reporting is critical.
Thank you.
