HOW TO READ MUSIC NOTE - PART 1
simple beginner method.
1. Learn the staff
Music is written on a staff of 5 lines and 4 spaces.
Notes go on a line or in a space.
The higher the note on the staff, the higher the pitch.
2. Learn the clefs
The clef tells you which notes the lines and spaces represent.
Treble clef
Used for higher sounds: piano right hand, violin, flute, guitar, etc.
· Lines bottom to top: E G B D F
Mnemonic: Every Good Boy Does Fine
· Spaces bottom to top: F A C E
Mnemonic: FACE
Bass clef
Used for lower sounds: piano left hand, cello, bass, trombone, etc.
· Lines bottom to top: G B D F A
Mnemonic: Good Boys Do Fine Always
· Spaces bottom to top: A C E G
Mnemonic: All Cows Eat Grass
Middle C is the note between the treble and bass staves. It sits on a small ledger line.
3. Learn the note names
The musical alphabet is only A B C D E F G, then it repeats.
So after G comes A again.
4. Learn rhythm values
A teacher will usually teach pitch and rhythm together.
· Whole note = 4 beats
· Half note = 2 beats
· Quarter note = 1 beat
· Eighth note = 1/2 beat
· Sixteenth note = 1/4 beat
· Rest = silence for that value
5. Learn the time signature
At the beginning you may see 4/4, 3/4, etc.
· Top number = how many beats in a measure
· Bottom number = which note gets one beat
In 4/4, a quarter note gets 1 beat.
6. Learn sharps, flats, and key signatures
· Sharp ( #) raises a note by a half step.
· Flat (b) lowers a note by a half step.
· Natural cancels a sharp or flat.
· The key signature at the start tells you which notes are sharp or flat throughout the piece.
